Bridgewater State University's Arts for Youth

Arts for Teens is excited about producing 2 more big, Broadway-style Musicals this summer – read below for a synopsis of each show.  Both musicals have a terrific set of characters, GREAT music, and most importantly, they are UPBEAT, FUN SHOWS to produce, giving each young performer the opportunity to shine in all 3 areas of performance: singing, dancing, and acting!

The Music Man Junior is a classic Broadway musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Wilson. The plot concerns a conman named Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk, before skipping town with the cash. Set in River City, Iowa, in 1912, prim Marian the librarian sees right through Hill, but when he helps her younger brother, Marian begins to fall in love with him. Harold, in turn falls for Marian, and risks being caught in order to win her love.  In 1957, the show became a hit on Broadway, winning five Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.  The show features some great musical numbers (including the famous Seventy-six Trombones, Gary, Indiana, & Till There Was You), a very entertaining plot, and some unforgettable, and highly entertaining, characters!

Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. is a delightful musical version of the famous story by Lewis Carroll, which has captured the hearts and imaginations of young people for years and years!  Join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! There are plenty of roles for teen performers, including three Cheshire Cats, and dozens of other wonderfully wacky characters. This fast-paced stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland features updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as “I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah!” This fun Disney show affords young performers the opportunity to create unforgettable characters, and to sing some of Disney’s finest songs, while having a great time rehearsing and preparing for opening night!

AfT shows range from modified versions of well-known Broadway "hits" to completely original productions scripted by the Teens and their teachers. The Arts for Teens show always takes place on the final Thursday evening of a session. The students are invited to come back the next day for a pizza party, and viewing of the Arts for Youth Artsfest!
