FLIGHT SAFETY FOUNDATION - BSU AVIATION STUDENT CHAPTER

The Flight Safety Foundation was formed in 1947 to pursue the continuous improvement of global aviation safety. The Foundation meets this objective through research, auditing, education, advocacy and publishing.

As an independent, impartial and nonprofit international membership organization, the Foundation is in a unique position to identify global safety issues, set priorities and serve as a catalyst to address the issues. The Foundation’s effectiveness in bridging cultural and political differences in the common cause of safety has earned worldwide respect.

Today, membership includes more than 1,200 organizations and individuals in 150 countries. The Foundation is based in Alexandria, Virginia, has a regional office in Melbourne, Australia, and is affiliated with associate organizations in Japan, Russia, Southeast Europe, Taiwan, China and West Africa.

In further fulfillment of our objectives, the Foundation is embarking upon a strategic initiative with higher education institutions through the establishment of FSF Student Chapters ©.  Through this collaborative program, undergraduate and graduate students will establish a local forum to promote research and development projects with industry counterparts.  The Foundation will develop a method to facilitate the exchange of information related to institutional research capabilities and industry research initiatives. It is envisioned that this program will become the foundation to bridge higher education research with the initiative of the aviation industry thereby forming a conduit of proactive research for future industry leaders.

FSF Student Chapters

Foundation corporate and individual members represent the worldwide aviation industry.  The establishment of a sustainable forum for the exchange of educational and industry initiatives is supported by the Foundation and provides many advantages to the sponsoring institution. It is also desirable that the sponsoring institution becomes a corporate member, thereby establishing a larger formal support group between the FSF Student Chapter and the Foundation. 

A FSF Student Chapter may be established with the mutual approval of the Foundation and the sponsorship of an academic institution offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs related to the aviation industry.  A Student Chapter will be comprised of no fewer than eight (8) registered student members and one (1) faculty advisor.  The Foundation will review the Student Chapter application and its supporting documentation and, if all is in order, recognizes the Student Chapter for a period of two years.  Officers may be elected as soon after formation as feasible, and provided to the Foundation for inclusion in the Chapter records.  Renewal of the Student Chapter application should be provided to the Foundation three months before its expiration in order to allow review of the Chapter’s achievements. 

The Student Chapter will consist of students from the sponsoring institution.  Student Chapter member applicants must be enrolled as full time students. The Student Chapter advisor may be a full time faculty member or a member of the Foundation.  Student applicants must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C) and be approved by a majority vote of the Student Chapter Board.  The fee to become a registered student member is $30 for U.S.-based students and $50 for non-U.S based students, except this fee is waived for the three Student Chapter Board members.  The registered members of the Student Chapter will annually elect of Student Chapter Board from the list of registered members.  The Board will consist of the positions of President, Vice President,  Secretary/ Treasurer.  The position of President will have overall responsibility for the conduct of the Student Chapter and will be the point of contact with other Student Chapters and the Foundation.  The Vice President will organize meetings and invite guest speakers to discuss their activities in relation to the aviation industry and potential student projects and will assist students in identifying and conducting research with industry partners.  The Secretary/Treasurer will take minutes of meetings and provide the Foundation with an annual summary of Student Chapter activities and, along with the faculty advisor, will be responsible for the collection and distribution of Student Chapter funds.

The Foundation sponsors various meetings and seminar throughout the world. Attendance at these events continues to expand.  Students are encouraged to participate, present research and network with industry leaders.  Registered student members will receive:

Proposed future FSF Student Scholarship Award Competition:

In order to maintain Student Chapter status, each Student Chapter will conduct an annual competition at their institution in one of the following areas:

·         publication of research

·         student project poster

·         publication of an articles in the Foundation AeroSafety World Magazine

·         recognition of achievement during internship at a FSF member organization

·         or another suitable competition. 

The Student Chapter in collaboration with the Foundation will develop an award program to recognize the winner(s) of this competition.  The award will be used to cover costs to attend an aviation related seminar or workshop. Any expenses above and beyond the amount of the award will be borne by the recipient. The Foundation welcomes the participation of its Student Chapters in FSF activities and although student membership is non-voting, inputs and comments are encouraged and valued. The faculty advisor is entitled to attend seminars at 25 percent discount from the regular member rates. Discussions with corporate members during FSF seminars can provide practical solutions to recognized mutual industry challenges.
