Licensure Program (Professional Level)

This master's degree program is designed for persons who have initial licensure in biology and are seeking professional licensure in the area of biology (8-12, 5-8). (Students needing initial licensure should refer in the catalog to the program entitled "Post Baccalaureate Program: Initial licensure for Secondary (Subject Areas: 8-12) and Middle Level (Subject Areas: 5-8) Teachers" or the Accelerated Post Baccalaureate under the Department of Secondary Education and Professional Programs.)

 

For information regarding application procedures and admission standards, students should consult the College of Graduate Studies.

Students seeking initial licensure should consult the section of this catalog entitled School of Education and Allied Studies for information pertaining to initial licensure, admission to and retention in Professional Education, as well as important institutional deadlines.   Currently two initial licensure programs are available to candidates.  In the traditional post baccalaureate program students will complete the undergraduate sequence of courses leading to initial licensure.  In the accelerated post baccalaureate program students will complete graduate level work towards their initial licensure, 6 credits of which would count towards their MAT.

 

GRPP 501 Graduate Program Planning

All accepted students must enroll under the direction of their adviser in GRPP 501 Graduate Program Planning, which is described under "Graduate Advisers and Graduate Program Planning" in the Graduate Admission section of the university catalog. As part of their program, students must satisfactorily complete the following curriculum:

  • EDMC531: Standards-based Curriculum
  • EDMC532: Teachers as Leaders
  • EDMC533: Standards-based Assessment
  • EDMC538: The Professional Teacher

Discipline Area Requirements

MAT students are expected to have, or acquire in addition to degree requirements, an appropriate background of college level courses, to be determined by the department.  This consists of 18 hours in biology which can be selected from any 500-level BIOE or BIOL courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences.  A course may be taken more than one time provided the subject matter covered is different.  Other graduate courses may be taken with prior approval of the department of biological sciences.

  • BIOE 511 Advanced Biological Topics and Techniques
  • BIOE 512 Advances in Biological Sciences Seminar
  • BIOE 513 Advances in Cell/Molecular Biology
  • BIOE 514 Advances in Biomedical/Physiological Biology
  • BIOE 515 Advances in Ecological/Environmental Biology

 

BIOE 511 - BIOE 515 will focus on outcomes. Teachers will be expected to develop a knowledge base appropriate to the subject matter and to develop the skills and techniques needed for laboratory or field work in the field of study.

 

Subject matter for BIOE 511 - BIOE 515 in some cases will be addressed by the requirements of graduate level companion courses designated by the department. Graduate students enrolled in the BIOE 500-level courses will receive additional assignments and exam questions for evaluation of graduate level mastery of the subject and a graduate level paper will be required. Each student will be required to pass a comprehensive examination prior to being eligible to receive the Master of Arts in teaching degree.  Details on the comprehensive examination policy currently in place can be obtained from the Department of Biological Sciences graduate coordinator. In addition to the BIOE 500-level courses, the Department of Biological Sciences offers a number of BIOL 500-level courses.  These courses are primarily advanced level subject matter courses in the biological sciences.  Any BIOL 500-level course offered by the Department of Biological Sciences can be taken as part of the MAT in Biology program.

 

Students who successfully complete the curriculum are eligible for professional licensure.
