Joseph Burdo received his B.S. in Biology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. After finishing at Penn State he moved on to The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, CA for his postdoctoral research. He joined the faculty of Bridgewater State College in the fall of 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. His responsibilities include teaching introductory biology for majors and non-majors, as well as the development of a neuroscience curriculum including an interdisciplinary neuroscience minor program.
Dr. Burdo is interested in research that focuses on the pathological mechanisms
of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers Disease, and how our diet can
help protect us against such diseases. There are antioxidant compounds in fruits

cellular damage in the brain, and Dr. Burdo is focusing on how these flavonoids
