Four former students (from the class of 2006) have been promoted into new positions at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Austin Asawang, Dawn Mota, and Stephen Tapis have been promoted to Senior Associate in the Assurance practice. Emmanuel Isabwa was promoted to Senior Associate in the Tax practice.
Barbara Mulford ('09) was named the winner of BSC's Center for Entrepreneurship Studies first business plan contest. Barbara will use the prize money to help start her new photo voltaic solar energy company.
On April 6, 2009 the local chapter of the American Marketing Association sponsored the Real World Bridgewater event. At 6:00pm in the Moakley Center Auditorium six Bridgewater State College management graduates came back for a live Q&A session. The event was free for all students and faculty to attend. A large audience participated in an interactive discussion where graduates gave no-nonsense answers to everything you could ever want to know about what life is like in the "real world" after graduation. The audience members gained valuable insight on topics such as how to get a job, where to and where not to look for employment, the importance of networking, valuable tools BSC has to offer, and general views on life after college. Alumni returning for the event were Lauren Garnett('06), Kristin Stieghorst('06), Kristyn Rotchford('06), Susie DeStasio('08), Christopher Norton('07), Joe Coleman('08).
Students in Dr. Margaret Brooks' Sports Economics class attended the Fair Trade Day fair where they learned about about sweatshop practices in the apparel industry.
Four students participated in the first annual Experiential Learning Symposium today. Francis Duggan (Accounting & Finance) and Luis Medizabal (Management) did oral presentations; Carina Lahens (Management) and Jimmy Lee (Management) had information booths on display.
The Bridgewater State College Chapter of the American Marketing Association received two awards for chapter Websites at the annual AMA Collegiate Conference held on March 27th in New Orleans. The Websites honored were www.bridgew.edu/ama and www.focusbsc.com. Senior Webmasters James Govoni and Stacy Varitimos developed and maintained the Websites. The awards included "Outstanding Chapter Communications" and "Outstanding Website Award". Sites were evaluated on Creativity and Appearance, Convenience - Ease of Navigation, Content for Members and Guests, and Currency. Francis Duggan serves as Chapter President and Dr. Robert Wolk is the advisor.
On Saturday March 28th in New Orleans, Chris Silva (marketing junior) received the third place cash prize and Daniel Norton (marketing senior) received the fifth place cash prize in the American Marketing Association sales competition sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Senior Michael Stenquist assisted Chris Silva in his presentation, while junior Nicholas Nunes assisted Daniel Norton.
Fifteen students represented Bridgewater State College and competed at the American Marketing Association Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, March 25th to the 29th. Alex Clatterbuck, Francis Duggan, Jacquelyn Levangie, Kayla Perro, and Justin Potvin competed in the Business Simulation Competition sponsored by Sabre . Meghan Campbell, Colleen D'Agnese, Alison Kelly, Jessica Scott, and Stacy Varitimos competed in the Chapter Exhibit Competition. Francis Duggan, John Meers, Daniel Norton, Nick Nunes, Chris Silva, and Michael Stenquist competed in the Northwestern Mutual Financial Sales Competition.
An elite team of marketing students were named semi-finalists in a national case study competition sponsored by Kodak and the American Marketing Association. Bridgewater State College students Jaime Carrozza, Alison Kelly, Luis Menzibal, Nicholas Numes, Eric Pitard, Bert Priddle, Chris Silva, and Michael Stenquist worked together to conduct a focus group with area mothers, employ a survey, perform analysis using SPSS software, and create a 40 page paper for the competition. The group will be recognized at the American Marketing Association Collegiate Conference on March 28th in New Orleans. Dr. Robert Wolk serves as advisor.
Tabatha Francisco and Porada Srisuwanporn are among 10 semi-finalists in the American Marketing Association "Take an Entrepreneur to Lunch" competition. The competition, sponsored by the Acton Foundation for Entrepreneurial Excellence, attracted 115 competitors. Students interviewed an entrepreneur and wrote a short essay on thy they admired that entrepreneur. Dr Robert Wolk serves as advisor.
The BSC AMA student chapter raised over $3000 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event held on campus, March 27-28, 2008. The team placed first in fundraising, raising almost 20% of every dollar raised for the event. The event included 26 teams of 272 individuals from the BSC community. The three top fundraisers for the event were all members of the AMA team with Laura Higgins (first place), Christopher Silva (second), and Kayla Perro (third). Other members of the AMA team included Danielle Dufresne, Elizabeth Drowne, Ashley Hess, Lee Ann Lambert, Kate Manley, and Michael Stenquist. AMA members Laura Higgins and Danielle Dufresne also served as Coordinators for the entire event.
The 30th AMA International Conference took place in New Orleans on April 3rd to 5th. Over 1300 students from 110 schools of business participated. The Bridgewater State College chapter competed in all major events. Susan DeStacio took fifth place in the national sales competition sponsored by Northwestern Mutual. She received 1cash award at the closing Awards Banquet.
The business simulation team captured fourth place in a grueling 7-hour competition sponsored by Sabre. The team included Mohamed Barakat, Francis Duggan, Diana Gyuroua, Stephanie O'Keefe, and Katherine Teunissen. The BSC Chapter also participated in the conference exhibit and presented a paper on "Working with Professional Chapters.The Bridgewater Chapter received two additional awards at the closing awards banquet for "Outstanding Marketing Week" activities and "Outstanding Fund Raising." Tyler Lankowski serves as Chapter President and LeeAnn Lambert serves as Executive Vice-president.
Two School of Business students have had their research accepted for presentation at the 22nd National Conference on Undergraduate Research to be held on April 10-12, 2008 at Salisbury University in Maryland. This program in sponsored by the BSC Office of Undergraduate Research. Mohamed Barakat (Management Major) will present his research "Internet Advertising and College Student Purchasing Patterns". Francis Duggan (Accounting and Finance) will present his research "The Financial Literacy of College Students ". Dr. Robert M. Wolk (Management) serves as faculty mentor for both students.
On November 7, 2007 the Bridgewater State College Economics team competed in the 2007 College Fed Challenge, which was held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The BSC team competed well against still competition in the first round from MIT, Yale and Northeastern. The Yale team won the round and advanced to the finals. Harvard University's team won the title of District Champion. Drs. Ilter Bakkal and Soma Ghosh worked hard to coach and mentor the Bridgewater team for them competition and accompanied them to Boston for the event.
On October 17, 2007, twelve members of the American Marketing Association from Bridgewater State College met in Newton Massachusetts for a humor in marketing event. "Laughing all the way to the Bank", was a panel discussion on Humor in Marketing for the 21st Century. The panel included Roy Golightly, the director of Targeted Marketing at FedEx, Dean Whitney, an internet veteran with a broad mix of brand marketing, creative, and strategy experience, Fred Wright, faculty for the Marketing Group at the College of Business at Northeastern University, Steve Connelly, of Connelly Partners a fast growing independent advertising agencies in the Northeast, and Andy Aylesworth, an associate professor of marketing and the Director of Master Science in Marketing Analytics Program at Bentley.The twelve students, all AMA members included: Susie DeStasio, Danielle Dufresne, Dave Felton, Lisa Friedman, Diana Gyurova, Benjamin Herbold, Ashley Hess, Steve Hudyka, Laura Izzo, LeeAnn Lambert, Tyler Lankowski, and Katherine Teunissen. The students went with Dr. Wolk, the advisor of the American Marketing Association, Bridgewater chapter.
School of Business student Joseph Coleman has been awarded an Adrian Tinsley Program Summer Research Grant of $3250 plus research expenses and conference travel. Joseph is a junior honors student with a marketing concentration. His research involves the effects of marketing misinformation on the wind power debate. Dr. Robert Wolk will serve as his faculty mentor.
