2009 Massachusetts Economics Challenge

An Invitation to all Massachusetts High School Teachers

It's happening now, and it's not too late to join the fun! Sign up for the 2009 Massachusetts Economics Challenge today. Teachers, please follow these easy steps:

  1. REGISTER: Go to www.econchallenge.org and choose Massachusetts. Explore the web site for information. Register yourself and your students for the online preliminary competition.
  2. PARTICIPATE IN ONLINE TRAINING: Visit www.bridgew.edu/CEE/
    or http://www.salemstate.edu/economics/center_economic_ed.php for PowerPoint teacher training for the Economics Challenge. Teachers who complete this online training are eligible to receive a certificate of completion.
  3. FIND OUT MORE: Call in to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston on Monday February 23, 2009 between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. The toll free call-in number is (800) 853-0223, and the participant access code is 223294. Massachusetts EconChallenge organizers will be on hand to answer your questions and discuss logistics.
  4. PREPARE STUDENTS: Check out these exams on the Council for Economic Education web site: http://economicschallenge.councilforeconed.org/test.php and also try out the practice exams here http://www.econchallenge.org/index.html?s=22&l=11 . Teachers may obtain copies of the exams used in the 2008 Massachusetts Economics Challenge finals exams by emailing Ann Reichert areichert@bridgew.edu.
  5. SUPERVISE STUDENTS TAKING THE ONLINE CHALLENGE: After creating the teams at www.econchallenge.org, teachers will be given unique access codes for each student. These access codes can be distributed to students when they are ready to take the Challenge. Your registered class teams may take the online multiple choice exam any time during the period of March 5-12, 2009. The exam must be taken under your supervision and without use of texts or notes.
  6. ACCOMPANY WINNING TEAMS THAT ADVANCE TO STATE FINALS: The state finals will be a live competition on Monday, April 6, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The top Adam Smith and top David Ricardo teams from across the state will be invited to compete in the day-long event, with a maximum of 2 teams per division per school. State champions will be awarded trophies and all participants receive certificates.
  7. ACCOMPANY WINNING STATE TEAMS THAT ADVANCE TO REGIONALS AND NATIONALS: The top-scoring Adam Smith and David Ricardo Massachusetts teams will advance to the Eastern Regional’s. From there, the winning regional team in each division will compete in the National Finals in New York City on May 16-18, 2009. There are cash prizes awarded to regional and national winners.
