Canadian Studies

Accomplishments

  The Canadian Studies Program at Bridgewater State College has been involved in many activities. The following is a list of some of the Program's recent accomplishments:

2008-2009
  • Two BSC students received Killam Exchange Fellowships to study in Canada:

    • Jennifer Couture attended McMaster University
    • Julia LaMotte attended McMaster University

  • Dr. Ilter Bakkal initiated and oversaw the formation of a student Canada Club. He serves as the club's faculty coordinator.

  • The Honourable Dr. John Hamm, Co-Chair of Democracy 250 and former Premier of Nova Scotia, delivered the 10th Distinguished Canadian Annual Address, "The Development of Democracy in Canada."

  • Mr. Nino Ricci, award-winning Canadian author read from his novel, The Origin of Species, and spoke about the writing process. Mr. Ricci will be the first Killam Professor of Canadian Studies during the fall 2009 semester.

  • Canadian Studies members attended the Middle Atlantic-New England Council for Canadian Studies/Southern Association of Canadian Studies (MANECCS/SACS) Joint Conference, where Dr. Kim Mac Innis, Dr. Michael Jones, and Dr. Anthony Cicerone presented papers. Dr. Andrew Holman served as co-convener of the conference.

  • Dr. Andrew Holman was elected President of MANECCS.

  • Dr. Anthony Cicerone was elected Vice President for Conference Arrangements for MANECCS.

  • Dr. Mary Shorey was awarded a Pedagogical Development Grant for a course concentrating on multicultural children's literature from Canada and several other countries.
