Canadian Studies Program

Overview

Since 1973, the BSU Canadian Studies Program has been dedicated to the teaching of Canada in the United States. Stressing academic excellence, the program:

  • Offers an increasing number and variety of courses, which students may take toward a minor in Canadian Studies, as part of their major, or as core courses and electives

  • Has created a student Canada Club, whose members take an annual trip to Canada

  • Offers summer study/research tours to Canada

  • Encourages students to take part in exchange programs and internships

To educate and enlighten students, the BSU community and the public, the program:

  • Established the Killam Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies

  • Brings Canadian speakers to campus

  • Funds research and collaborative projects

  • Organizes events to facilitate communications between Canadian and U.S. governments, businesses, and organizations

Canadian Studies Program faculty members participate in academic conferences and maintain membership in many organizations, including:

  • National Consortium for Teaching Canada

  • Association for Canadian Studies in the United States

  • New England-Canada Business Council

  • Business Advisory Council for Massachusetts and Nova Scotia

  • Middle Atlantic-New England Council for Canadian Studies

Further, the program promotes communications between Canadian and U.S. scholars by:

  • Collaborating with Acadia University on the use of technology in the classroom

  • Conducting joint classes via web conferencing in collaboration with King's College, University of Western Ontario

  • Working with Acadia University to establish a student teacher exchange program

  • Working with Dalhousie University to establish an internship exchange program

The wish of the BSU Canadian Studies Program is that its efforts to increase awareness of Canada among students and the public, and promote involvement in diverse areas of study, will foster reciprocal understanding and inspire the youth of both countries to combine their knowledge and talents to work toward the solution of issues facing not only Canada and the United States, but the world.
