What is a Self Credential File?

As a teacher and/or school administrator candidate you will need to prepare your credentials for prospective employers. Credentials usually include 3-5 letters of reference and an official transcript (the Registrar's Office can give you an official transcript). If you have already obtained certification your credentials might also include your formal teaching license from the Massachusetts Department of Education. Education candidates will keep an original copy of their credentials and make copies to send to school districts as part of their application materials.

Whom should you ask to serve as a reference?

Your letters of reference should come from student teacher supervisors, cooperating teachers, faculty members, employers and others who can comment on your skills, qualifications, experience and potential capabilities as a new teacher or administrator. Think carefully about whom you select to recommend you. Ask potential reference letter writers if they can write a strong letter of support for you, to ensure that you choose the right authors.

You should provide a copy of your resume to all reference writers to assist them in highlighting your unique skills and experiences. If your reference writer(s) has never written a letter of reference before, you can direct them to the Career Services web site to print a copy of Advice for First Time Reference Writers.  Letters should be typed and on professional letterhead.

How do I prepare my materials?

After collecting letters of reference from your reference writers, you will want to assemble them in a professional packet to be sent with your resume and cover letter. You will need to create a cover sheet and then add the other materials. The packet should be assembled as follows:
