Graduate assistantships and fellowships, which are not offered at the undergraduate level, are available to matriculated graduate students at larger graduate schools across America. The College of Graduate Studies at Bridgewater State University has consistently expanded its assistantship and fellowship programs for our graduate students over the past decade. These programs enable graduate students to attend graduate school without almost any cost for tuition and fees while receiving a bi-weekly stipend for working in an academic or administrative department in the University. Graduate students are often surprised that graduate assistantships have so many financial and professional advantages for them. In other words, a graduate assistantship will enable a student to finance his or her graduate education almost completely. While many universities have reduced the number of graduate assistantships/Fellowships that they offer master's students, Bridgewater has continued to increase these programs.

The College of Graduate Studies offers the following programs:

1. Graduate Assistantships
2. Graduate Research Assistantships
3. Graduate Writing Fellowships

Information about these three types of assistantship/fellowship programs can be found in the Graduate Student Assistantship/Fellowship Handbook. The information in the handbook will guide you through this process and the selection criteria. You will certainly enjoy the dual role as a graduate student and professional employee as you are completing your graduate degree.

Appointments are competitive and are determined by the following: undergraduate and/or graduate grade point averages, pertinent experience, educational preparation and interviews. They are intended to encourage and assist superior students in pursuing graduate study and in completing the requirements for graduate degrees in the minimum possible time. The guidelines are to be used in the employment of GAs, GRAs and GWFs within the university departments.

A mandatory orientation for new GAs, GRAs and GWFs is held every September. Supervisors and second-year GAs, GRAs and GWFs are welcome to attend. Additional details about orientation will be sent closer to the start of the fall semester.
