Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the admission deadlines to apply to the Counseling Programs?

We have two admissions periods each year.  Deadlines to apply for admission are February 1st and October 1st.

How long does it typically take to complete the program?

Master's Degree programs (51-66 credits) will take a full-time student 2 1/2 - 3 years, and up to 6 years part-time.  The length of time to complete a Post Master's or CAGS program will depend on the number of credits a student must complete (minimum of 24 credits for Post Master's and a minimum of 30 credits for CAGS).

How many courses can I take as a matriculated student and be considered a full-time student?

Three courses, or nine credits, are considered full-time for graduate students.

How long do I have to complete the program?

Students must complete the program six years from the date of your first graduate course.

How many courses can I take before I have been accepted into a specific Counseling program?

Students may take up to three Bridgewater State courses before becoming a matriculated student.  Of these three, two (if approved) may be from a Counseling Program at another academic institution.

How do I know what courses to register for?

Students may either attend a monthly informational session or contact the Counselor Education office (508-531-2836) for information regarding courses.

What if I don't meet all of the admission requirements for the specific Counseling program that I am applying to, i.e. GRE scores, GPA, etc.?

The Counselor Education faculty look at each student's application as a whole and do not exclude students based on any one criterion.  Prospective students are encouraged to take at least two of the four "core" courses (CNGC 510, CNGC 528, CNGC 529, CNGC 500) and get a "B" or better to strengthen their application.

How do I gain the necessary counseling related experience to satisfy the admission requirement?

Prospective students are encouraged to attend a monthly informational session to explore options.  Dates are posted on the Counselor Education home page.

Where can I get more information about a specific Counseling program or the Department of Counselor Education in general?

Informational sessions are held each month during the academic year (September through May).  Contact the Counselor Education office at 508-531-2836 for information regarding these sessions.
