This program offers a broad-based training in the visual arts. In addition to course work, internships give first-hand experience in such areas as graphic design, museology, exhibition planning, and community art.
The mission of the Art Department at Bridgewater State College is to engage students in the exploration of their individual creative and art historical interests. Our faculty strives to create an environment in which students can investigate a full range of creative expressions in the studio and classroom and where diverse interests in art production and art history can thrive. In addition, our faculty is committed to providing a strong global understanding of art through direct experiences with artists, art works and architecture, as well as through the teaching of studio arts, art appreciation and art history. Studio enrollments are kept low to promote a sense of community and positive classroom dynamics. This contributes to strong one-on-one student-teacher relationships that lead to in-depth understanding and development of techniques, skills and individual styles, along with a knowledge and appreciation of achievements within the history of art.
The Art Department also serves the needs of both the BSC community and the surrounding region. We are strongly committed to the preparation and education of new and practicing teachers of art who teach throughout Massachusetts. The art faculty serves all the students at Bridgewater State College through our extensive core curriculum course offerings. The Art Department contributes to the cultural richness and artistic vitality of this region by providing for the training of artists, art historians and other art professionals, and by offering a program of exhibitions and guest art professionals.
