Offering insight on international cultures and affairs this academic year was
a group of visiting foreign scholars to Bridgewater State University. The
scholars met with administrators, enrolled in courses, lectured and attended
conferences on and off campus, all while experiencing the benefits of cultural
exchange and cooperative research. Two found support on campus during political
turmoil and natural disasters occurring in their home countries.

Bridgewater has welcomed to campus a new honor society. Phi Beta Delta is the
honor society for international scholars and those who work in international
programming, with more than 275 chapters around the world. Each honors those who
participate in global educational endeavors and promotes international

Last year, Bridgewater partnered with the Home for Little Wanderers with the goal of bringing a number of the young people who "age out" of the state's foster care system to the institution to provide them with a chance to obtain a college education. (more)
Thirty-nine new participants of the university's mentoring program, FAM for Change, enjoyed a week of fun and interaction at the program's 3rd annual Summer Institute, co- facilitated this year by representatives from international organizations. (more)

Dr. Itzchak Weismann of the University of Haifa, Israel, delivered a lecture at BSC on the practices and worldwide perceptions of Islamic fundamentalists and Sufis.
His talk, "The Islamic Other: Fundamentalism and Sufism in the Muslim World and Beyond," centered on how and why practicing Islamic fundamentalists and Sufis in the Middle East are negatively perceived in the region and around the world. Dr. Al-Sharki came to BSC at the end of January and returned to her homeland in early March. During her six weeks here, she lectured extensively both on- and off-campus, sharing her thoughtful discourse on such topics as women's rights, ending global violence, freedom of the press and human rights. It is especially geared toward those who are looking for a way to make a difference while staying on campus. Greeting the students was Mary Delgado, assistant to the vice president for external affairs, who told the attendees, "We want today's event to be a sharing opportunity, so we've invited several of our international students to tell us about holiday traditions in their home countries and several of our American students will also share stories about how we celebrate the season in the United States." The goal of national Mix it Up at Lunch Day, held earlier this month at B-R, and simultaneously at 10,000 other U.S. schools, is to get students to reach out and get to know someone new. Each of the past six years, B-R officials have had to hire a disc jockey for the event. This year, Bridgewater State College's student radio station WBIM went remote and provided the tunes. (more)

The author's visit coincided with Banned Books Week at BSC, which celebrates the freedom to read whatever one chooses by promoting books that have been challenged by or banned over the years. Today at lunchtime, there were more than sandwiches and entrees on the menu at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School. There was also a chance for students to do their civic duty. More than 30 B-R students registered to vote during a lunchtime Rock the Vote event held at the school. Indeed, BSC's online courses, a growing segment of the college's offerings for some time, has this summer experienced a large jump in enrollment. Compared to a year ago, online enrollment for summer session I was up 109 percent; for session II there was a 42.5 percent increase over the numbers from last year. Also, roughly 80 percent of the slots for online courses this summer are full. (more)

The number of Bridgewater students studying abroad more than doubled between 2006 and 2007. The increase comes at a time when this type of learning opportunity is increasingly seen as a key part of today's higher-education experience. The Division of External Affairs and the Office of Study Abroad have worked to make this happen, and the dividends are reflected in the recent increase of students studying abroad, to 100 in fall 2007 from 48 the previous year.
