I am currently the Assistant Director and co-founder of the Faculty Advocacy Network (FAN) as Pam Russell and I shared a common vision of what we as faculty could do to help support our fellow faculty members (old and new!!). Additionally, I have always found that a very frustrating part of our jobs is that we don't have the time and seldom the opportunity to get to know our fellow faculty members outside of our department and/or outside of our little cohort of offices. It is my hope that FAN can be used to help us meet more faculty members and provide us with opportunities to get to know each other better and share or passions for teaching, research, and, especially, our students. |
In addition to my role with FAN, I'm also an Associate Professor of Biology and currently the Chair of the Biology Department. I have been at BSC since the Fall of 1999. However, my original starting point was quite far away. I was born and raised outside of Los Angeles and eventually made my way to Cal Poly, Pomona were I received my B.S. degree in Animal Science and an M.S. in Agriculture were I began my studies in Reproductive Physiology. I continued my education and began my cross-country travels by going to Texas A&M for my Ph.D. (in Veterinary Anatomy) specializing in Cell Biology and Reproductive Physiology and then continuing on to the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology at the Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC) where I did my post-doctoral studies on Reproductive Immunology. My research interests have dealt with the interaction of the embryo and the uterus during the initial stages of pregnancy and the development of immune privilege during pregnancy. I have worked with a variety of species from mice to human and many other species in between (my running joke with my student is my experiences working with pigs was the best training for working with them!).
It was during my time at KUMC that I became acquainted with New England and Southeastern Massachusetts while spending my summers as a Faculty member for the Frontiers in Reproduction Course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. I welcomed the opportunity to come to BSC and return to a primarily undergraduate institution where I have been able to pursue my passion of working with students, especially through undergraduate research projects and exposing them to the wonders of Biology. I have been fortunate to have a number of fantastic students who have matriculated on to graduate, medical, and veterinary schools.
When I'm not at BSC, I try to spend my time enjoying the company of my wife, Meghan and our two Labrador retrievers (often referred to as dumb and dumber), out kayaking, or doing woodwork.
