Faculty Advocate Profile

Theresa A. Coogan, Ph.D.

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counselor Education within the Graduate School of Education. I am part of a graduate-only faculty for students earning a Masters degree in School, Mental Health, or Student Affairs Counseling. While I am involved with the courses and programs for all degrees offered in the Department of Counselor Education, I focus my teaching and research/scholarship mainly on the school counseling field. I was excited to come to BSC given the institutions historic perspective of being a teaching college. I have a real passion for being in the classroom and working with students. The unique aspects of my scholarship agenda include role identity, role ambiguity, and role conflict amongst school counselors; professional identity development for school counselors-in-training; counseling program evaluations in primary and secondary schools; crisis planning and interventions in schools; group work in schools; and, pedagogical tools impacting graduate student learning in a counseling program.

I am involved campus-wide in various committees and activities as well as in my profession. I am eager to explore new activities, challenges, and opportunities to continue to grow within my professional identity as a counselor educator. I earned a PhD in Counselor Education at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. I also received a BA in Psychology and an EdM in School Counseling from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. I grew up in Buffalo, NY and had never traveled to the New England area prior to accepting this position at BSC in the fall 2007 as a full-time tenure-track faculty member. Since moving to the area, I became active in the sport of scuba diving and find that to be a wonderful relaxation strategy for me, along with cooking and baking. In addition, I’m very excited to be in an area with a major league baseball team as I love baseball, and love going to any level baseball game I can get tickets to! I joined FAN at the end of my first year at BSC. I am excited to remain apart of this network throughout these beginning years here at BSC, as this is a wonderful opportunity for networking across the campus. If you wish for my support and guidance as a faculty advocate please contact me.
