What is the Frank-Tremblay Scholarship?
The Frank-Tremblay Scholarship is for students with
financial need who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender as well as
for allies with financial need who have advocated for the GLBT community.
Preference is given to students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or
transgender and who have lost financial assistance from their parents upon
disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
What is the history of the
Frank-Tremblay Scholarship?
The need for the scholarship became apparent when students
reported a loss of parental financial support for college because of their gay,
lesbian, bisexual or transgender identity. The seed money of the scholarship was
raised, in part, by Lucie Blue Tremblay, a singer-songwriter, through a benefit
concert at BSC. The scholarship, one of the first of its kind, was also
publicized in The
Advocate magazine and generated a great deal of support via
financial donations from its readership across the country. BSC employees and
alumni also contributed to this important scholarship, leading the scholarship
to receive endowment status within two years of its initiation.
The Frank-Tremblay Scholarship was named after
Massachusetts representative
Barney Frank and singer-songwriter Lucie
Blue Tremblay. Both of these outstanding role models are out and
proud advocates for the rights of GLBT people, tirelessly working to end
oppression and bring equality to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
individuals.
