Monthly Programs
Food for Thought
Food for Thought is a monthly discussion group where students voice their
opinions and learn about topics of interest over lunch provided by the center.
Representatives from a BSU department or student group are frequently invited to
discuss a GLBTA topic that intersects with their discipline or area of interest.
This is a great way to get to know people on campus that you might not otherwise
have the opportunity to meet and to learn more about BSU resources for GLBTA
students. This is a student-run program.
First Tuesday of every month
12:30 - 1:30 pm
Lunch Provided
Transgender Advocacy Group (TAG)
Due to rapid growth and student interest, TAG is applying during the Spring 2012
semester to be an officially SGA-recognized student group.
The group's main purpose is to educate the campus
about transgender issues and advocate for the inclusion of transgender, genderqueer, agender, intersex, and otherwise gender-variant people at BSU
and beyond. Please contact the group's president, Tyler Hargis (thargis@student.bridgew.edu)
for meeting times and locations.
Coming Out Discussion Group
A group for those considering coming out, those who may have difficulty
coming out, and those who wish to support them. This is a student-run
program.
Last Wednesday of every month
5:30 - 7:00 pm
Dinner Provided
Queer People of Color Discussion Group
Too often, GLBT students of color feel like they must prioritize one
of their identities above the other. GLBTA spaces, being a microcosm of our
larger society, have been known to disenfranchise people of color. Likewise,
communities of color, also microcosms of our larger society, have been known to
disenfranchise GLBTA individuals. This dichotomy places queer students of color
and their allies in the unfair position of feeling like they must choose between
their race or their sexual orientation or gender identity. We at the Pride
Center seek to be a safe place where GLBTA students of color are actively
supported and affirmed.
The student developers of this program extend an invitation to all members of
the BSU community to join us in open and honest discussions of racism and white
privilege alongside discussions of cisgender and heterosexual privilege.
Third Monday of every month

GLBTA Potluck at the
First Parish
Church Unitarian Universalist in Bridgewater
We've all been invited to attend a dinner hosted by the
First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist in Bridgewater (near the Art
building) for the 6th year in a row. Our neighbors have given unwavering support
for GLBTA equity and inclusion in many things they do. You may remember that
their rainbow flag was vandalized twice two years ago and the BSU community rose
up in solidarity and spoke out against those hateful criminal acts. This annual
dinner in October is only one of the many gestures of support and outreach they
have extended to us. The members of the congregation will host a potluck for us
(including vegan and vegetarian options), followed by a discussion about all of
our respective experiences advocating for GLBTA equity and inclusion in
Bridgewater and beyond. Come hungry and ready to participate or listen in on the
discussion. Please RSVP to Jen Coutu at
jcoutu@bridgew.edu by Oct 14th. We hope to see you there!

GenderQueer? Pomosexual? Pansexual? Non-Binary
Identities in a Binary World
Oftentimes, we view sexuality and gender on a continuum with mutually exclusive
opposites at the ends. For many people, however, such conceptions do not
adequately describe their identities or experiences. They are the folks who live
"in the gray," and who challenge preconceived notions about sexuality and gender
for not only the heterosexual community but also the GLBT community. Join Pride
Center Ambassadors Lou Johnson and Kelly Neufell as they facilitate a discussion
on fluid, non-binary sexual and gender identities.

Creating an LGBT-Inclusive Classroom
An LGBT-inclusive environment is a vital part of creating a safe space for
all K -12 students. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commission on Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth provides recommendations for fostering
such inclusion, and Massachusetts bullying laws mandate a safe environment. At
the end of this program, participants will be able to
* Summarize the characteristics of an LGBT-inclusive environment
* Distinguish between MA legal requirements and its recommendations
for developing safe and inclusive environments
* Identify MA guidelines for developing an inclusive curriculum
This workshop is conceived, created, and delivered by Kelly Neufell, Pride
Center Ambassador, and has the co-sponsorship of Dr. Anna Bradfield, Dean of
Education and Allied Studies.
