This powerful documentary follows the lives of six Boston area GLBT seniors who are abandoned by their children or the health care system and who oftentimes must retreat into the closet to avoid being bullied by the very people hired to take care of them.

GLBTA Potluck by the First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist in Bridgewater
We've all been invited to attend a dinner hosted by the First Parish Church Unitarian Universalist in Bridgewater (near the Art building) for the 5th year in a row. Our neighbors have given unwavering support for GLBTA equity and inclusion in many things they do. You may remember that their rainbow flag was vandalized twice last spring and the BSU community rose up in solidarity and spoke out against those hateful criminal acts. This annual dinner in October is only one of the many gestures of support and outreach they have extended to us. The members of the congregation will host a potluck for us (including vegan and vegetarian options), followed by a discussion about all of our respective experiences advocating for GLBTA equity and inclusion in Bridgewater and beyond. Come hungry and ready to participate or listen in on the discussion.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a devastating document of the AIDS crisis in the United States.  Individual panels of the quilt represent lives lost to this disease; when combined, the sheer, overwhelming size of the quilt represents the impact of AIDS not only on particular people's lives, but also on art and politics in our time.  Bridgewater State University will display selected sections of the quilt between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on December 2, 2010, in the RCC Small Ballroom.  Matt Bell, Assistant Professor of English, will deliver a lecture about the quilt called "The Art of Losing" twice that day: at 11:30 a.m. and at 2:30 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.  This event is sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program and by the GLBTA Pride Center.

10 Myths of Social Justice
Tune into this online seminar with students from the Student Diversity Council and the Social Justice League along with campus administrators and others
dedicated to fostering greater equity and inclusion. This seminar is an opportunity to dialogue with other social justice advocates across the country. Learn how you can be more effective in increasing social justice at BSU by intelligently refuting the 10 common myths of social justice, such as:

~ The myth that social justice is too vague a concept to be useful.
~ The myth that social justice is synonymous with "diversity" or "multiculturalism."
~ The myth that there's no scholarship on social justice.
~ The myth that students just aren't that interested.
~ The myth that social justice is a "liberal" cause irrelevant to conservatives.
~ The myth that good intentions with respect to social justice lead to good outcomes.
~ And others

Food for Thought
The Case Against Prop 8
In November 2008, Californians approved Proposition 8 which repealed marriage equality for Californians. Challenges to the passed amendment have been only marginally successful.
During the month of January 2010, a federal court is hearing arguments that the California amendment violates the U.S. Constitution's equal rights and privacy protections. Both parties in the case promise to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if the ruling is not in their favor.

Many marriage equality advocates fear that we will lose in the Supreme Court, thus risking everything we have gained in the past decade. Others say we have waited long enough and we must demand our rights. What do you think? Join us for what will be a lively debate.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Dan Choi Coming to BSU
In collaboration with the Student Government Association, the Pride Center is thrilled to announce that Dan Choi will be here to talk about why Don't Ask, Don't Tell should be repealed.

Dan Choi is recognized as "the face" of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. According to his web site (www.ltdanchoi.com/index.html), "...on March 19, 2009, Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and Iraq veteran fluent in Arabic, announced that he was gay on The Rachel Maddow Show. Because of three words - "I am gay" - Lt. Choi's life changed forever. Despite his extreme value as an Arabic speaker able to communicate quickly and clearly with the Iraqi people, one month after his announcement Lt. Dan Choi was notified that the Army had begun discharge proceedings against him. He was one of only eight soldiers from his graduating class who majored in Arabic."

APRIL
"Before Night Falls"
Latin American & Carribean Studies, the GLBTA Pride Center, Women & Gender Studies, and the Office of Institutional Diversity are proud to present the Spring film series, "Transforming Our Imaginations, Transforming Our Lives."
This film explores the world of brilliant gay Cuban expatriate writer Reinaldo Arenas, with award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem playing Arenas, directed by American artist Julian Schnabel, and featuring global actors. The film sheds light on the complexities of home vs. exile, reality vs. imagination, and the gorgeous, pioneering artistry of Arenas and his life within the context of Castroist Cuba and post-Stonewall downtown New York City. Johnny Depp's turn as both a machista military thug and a beautiful drag queen provides further food for thought! facilitated by Leora Lev, Professor of Language, and Lisa Forest, Pride Center.

"Madam Satã"
Latin American & Carribean Studies, the GLBTA Pride Center, Women & Gender Studies, and the Office of Institutional Diversity are proud to present the Spring film series, "Transforming Our Imaginations, Transforming Our Lives."
A story inspired by the life of one of the most remarkable figures in Brazilian popular culture, João Francisco dos Santos (1900-1976). In turn, bandit, transvestite, street fighter, brothel cook, convict and father to seven adopted children, dos Santos- better known as "Madame Satã"- was also a notorious gay performer who pushed social boundaries in a volatile time. The story begins in 1932, in Rio de Janeiro's bohemian Lapa district, when João Francisco is about to achieve his dream: becoming a stage star. Discussion facilitated by Kim Davis, Assistant Professor of English.
