Call Him 'Dr. Phil' Now

Often when he's been on campus, Philip Klotzbach, '99, has joked that when he gets his PhD everyone can call him "Dr. Phil," after the TV personality/advice giver. That day arrived last month.

The Plymouth native graduated from BSC at the age of 18 and has spent his intervening years at Colorado State University as a student and hurricane expert of growing reputation. In July, he earned his PhD from CSU in seasonal hurricane prediction.

The degree caps off what has already been an exceptional career for the 27-year-old, who today stopped by campus. He is the chief architect of CSU's seasonal hurricane forecast for the entire U.S., after having been mentored at the university by veteran forecaster William Gray. Much of Mr. Klotzbach's dissertation was culled from papers he had already published in peer-reviewed journals.

Still, it was a lot of hard work. "It's nice to have it finished," he said, while visiting with his former teacher, BSC Professor Vernon Domingo. "It's a nice feeling."

So, if you see him while he's visiting, be sure to give a big hello to the new "Dr. Phil."
