Geography Programs

NOTE: Students who declared the geography major prior to September 1, 2005 may choose to remain in the program in effect at the time they declared the major, or they may choose one of the programs described on this page. Each student should consult with an advisor in the department before making this decision, in order to balance educational goals with timely progress toward graduation.

The Department of Geography offers two options for students wishing to major in geography:

  1. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) is intended for students who wish to pursue graduate study or careers as Geography practitioners in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or private industry.
  2. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A) is intended for students who wish to pursue a career in early childhood, elementary, or secondary education.

The department also offers a Minor in Geography, which students may combine with any other major offered by the college. See the Minor page for details.

Each student will develop an individual course of study in close consultation with a faculty advisor. The course of study will include the following minimum requirements:

Core Requirements 18 credit hours
Degree-Specific requirements for B.A. or B.S. 6 credit hours
Cognate Requirement 3 credit hours
39 Credit hours total

Students will also be strongly encouraged to take additional courses in foreign languages, mathematics, study abroad, and natural sciences, according to their goals and interests.
