Cords and Regalia

Honor Cords

Students who are graduating with academic honors based on their cumulative GPA (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) will receive their honors cords on commencement day. There are three types of academic honors (laudatory status), each with a separate cord:

Cum Laude (3.3–3.59) White cord
Magna Cum Laude (3.6-3.79) White and red cord
Summa Cum Laude (3.8+ up) White, red and gold cord

Only the Registrar's Office can verify that a graduate has earned honors and thus all questions should be directed to that office prior to the ceremony. A representative will also be available on commencement day. The cord is draped around the neck, with the knot at the back and the cords hanging down symmetrically on both sides.

At Commencement in May, published and announced honors will be based on a student's GPA as of the prior Fall semester. However, honors listed on the official academic transcript and diploma will be based on the student's final GPA at the point of graduation.

Honor Sashes

Students who will graduate with Commonwealth or Departmental Honors will receive a white sash with the BSU crest. Sashes are awarded at the Honors Dinner or upon receipt of the Honors thesis. Only the Honors Program can verify that a graduate has earned Commonwealth or Departmental Honors and thus all questions should be directed to that office prior to the day of the ceremony. The sash is draped around the neck, hanging down symmetrically on both sides.

Academic Honor Societies

Official insignias (e.g. medallions, cords and pins) of university-recognized departmental academic honor societies may be worn. Regalia for an academic honor society are distributed by the academic department in advance of commencement and are not available at the assembly areas on commencement day.
