For twenty-three years the Hall of Black Achievement (HOBA) has discovered, detailed and disclosed the significant achievements and contributions of African Americans, Cape Verdeans, and Hispanics of African descent who have made significant contributions to the Commonwealth. A highlight of each HOBA celebration was the recognition of students of African descent (African-American, Caribbean, Latino/a, Cape Verdean) from each of the nine institutions in the Massachusetts State University System. HOBA has been instrumental in helping us celebrate both the history and future of people of color in the region.
Bridgewater State University (BSU), the sole sponsor of HOBA, is dedicated to the success of all students attending BSU. On-campus data demonstrates, that BSU has effectively eliminated the achievement gap between all of our first time full-time students and students of color, first generation students, and those from economically stressed families. This level of success over such a brief period of time is virtually unprecedented in public institutions of higher education.
In order to build on this success, and ensure that this important work is given the highest priority in time and resources, Bridgewater State University President Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria has asked that the yearly HOBA celebration be suspended, and that all personnel and financial resources be focused on supporting student success. Bridgewater State University is pleased to continue to offer the HOBA materials to the campus and external communities through electronic access http://www.bridgew.edu/HOBA/Gallery.cfm and community exhibits. (Please contact Donna Wood in the Office of Institutional Diversity (donna.wood@bridgew.edu) if you would like to discuss the use of the portraits in your community.)
BSU's Student Achievers will continue to be honored by Bridgewater State University at the annual Kente Cloth Celebration. For more information please contact Ms. Natara Gray at the BSU Multicultural Center at 508.531.6166 or to natara.gray@bridgew.edu .
