1999 Massachusetts State College Student Achievers


Marie-Rose Pierre-Louis is an accounting and finance major at Bridgewater State College. Her scholastic achievements have been previously recognized by her induction into the Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society and by receiving the United States Achievement Academy Award. She has been active as a Student Senator at a previous college and continues to support younger students in their leadership activities at Bridgewater State College. As a single, head of household parent, full time employee and student, she still manages to volunteer as a translator at Brockton Hospital for French/Creole native speakers and provides assistance to children who need transportation to CCD at St. Edward’s Church. Marie-Rose plans to teach at the college level after graduation.

Catherine Silva is a Dean’s list student majoring in accounting and finance at Bridgewater State College. In recognition of her scholastic achievements, she has been inducted into Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, received the Mass Women in Public Higher Education Student Achievement Award and the National Collegiate Leadership Award. Catherine is also a member of the Cape Verdean Association and participates in Afro-Am Society activities. Her "spare" time activities include: foster parent, math tutor, assistant soccer coach for the Stoughton Youth League, National Head Start Association’s Parent Training Program, Parent Teacher Organization, Bible Talk Assistant Leader, and volunteer fundraising. She plans a career in financial management after graduation.

Chedelyne Alexander is a Dean’s list student majoring in human services at Fitchburg State College. Her leadership activities include: an officer and member of the Black Student Union, steering committee for ACCESS program, Black History month planning committee, and a two-year participant of the Fitchburg State College Leadership Conference. In addition, she is a member of the programs committee at Fitchburg State College, an umbrella organization that oversee and administers funding ($80,000) for all programs of campus student organizations, and a student manager for the athletics department. Chedelyne’s goal is to become a social worker for the department of social services after graduate school at Boston College.

Gregory Dorfeuille is a Dean’s list student majoring in sociology at Fitchburg State College. His scholastic and leadership achievements have been previously recognized by his membership in the Honors Society History Club and ACCESS award recognition each semester since the spring of 1995. Gregory’s leadership activities include currently serving as vice-president of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and its past president (1995-97). He active involvement in the community includes being a mentor for 3 local area high school students, a member of MassPIRG, coordinating a food and clothing drive, participation in the Walk for Hunger, and conducting a fund-raiser to benefit homeless shelters. Gregory’s future goal is to work in the social science field.

No photo availableConstance Breeden is a senior majoring in fashion design at Massachusetts College of Art. She has won numerous awards, including the Barbara Gagel Design Award and the Fashion Award for Design and Excellence. She has been an active member of the Boston community, serving on the Board of Parents United for Child Care, and volunteering at the Washington Beech Community Preschool. She has also studied at Newbury College and at the London College of Fashion. Her original designs have been shown at several area fashion shows. Constance’s goal is to teach fashion design at the college level.

Dayanne Danier is a senior fashion design major at Massachusetts College of Art. Dayanne has been a leader in the community during the last four years, including serving as the student government representative for Spectrum, an organization for students of color. She has also been a MassArt Orientation leader, a college mentor, and participated in community service projects. Dayanne spent June of 1997 in Paris, where she was one of 25 students from the United States chosen to study at the Paris Fashion Institute. She has won numerous awards at the college, including the Fashion Area Certificate of Recognition and the Student Government Service Award. Dayanne’s goal is to own her own clothing design company.

Alisha Cropper is a senior at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. During her two-year involvement with the African American Studies club, Alisha was able to revitalize an organization that needed new leadership. She has been instrumental in planning cultural activities and events open to both the college community and community at large, including a live concert that she planned and organized. In addition to successfully completing two intercepts with WILD/1090-AM, Alisha has also assisted the admissions office with recruiting, attended leadership conferences at SUNY-Cobleskill and Union College, and participates in intramural sports. Her professional goal is to pursue a career in radio broadcasting as an on air personality.

Richard Ebhodaghe is a senior nursing major at Salem State College. A McNair Scholar, he has maintained a 3.21 GPA and has been on the dean’s list every semester. His many academic distinctions include: selection as a Teagle LPN-BSN Scholar, a member of the Honor society of Nursing, and an applicant to Segma Theta Tau International. Richard is active in the Salem State College Nursing Student Association and regularly volunteers to work in the Salem State College Flu Clinic. Similarly, he is a volunteer with the Salem Public Health Flu Vaccination program. Richard plans to further his studies at the doctoral level with a specialization in nursing education or a medical degree in public health. His ultimate goal is to promote health education within minority populations.

Sachielle Mondesir is a senior at Salem State College majoring in general studies with a focus on communications disorders. A McNair Scholar, Sachielle has maintained a 3.46 GPA and has been on the Dean’s List ever semester. Her many activities with the McNair program include serving as the secretary to the National Association and as a contributing writer for the local chapter’s newsletter. Her service to the community includes working with the elderly and assisting them in their daily living. Sachielle is a highly successful student who serves as a role model and mentor for many students. She plans to further her studies at the doctoral level with a specialization in the intervention and assessment process of bilingual school age and pre-school children.

Paula Galvao is a senior at Westfield State College majoring in communications with a concentration in television production. Her leadership and service to the college community include: creating and producing the Westfield State College monthly television talk show "Off the Hook," operations director of the WSC-TV Club, president and vice-president of the Third World Organization (TWO), associate editor of PRISM, a literary publication of TWO, the WSC Campus Activity board, a student supervisor in the office of minority affairs, and an Urban Education Program peer counselor. She will be completing her senior year in New York City as a full-time intern at "20/20", the ABC News magazine program. Although Paula plans to work in the broadcasting industry, her ultimate goals are to start her own production company and to earn a doctoral degree while remaining involved in community service.

Lecelle Quamina is a senior at Westfield State College majoring in biology with a minor of chemistry. Her academic achievements include: 1997 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Urban Education/Multicultural Excellence Award (1998), and Dean’s List recognition (1997). Lecelle’s campus and community leadership activities include: current vice-president of the Third World Organization (TWO), multicultural representative to the student government association, member of TriBeta Biological Society, past member of the Tekoa yearbook staff, contributing editor of the TWO literary publication, "PRISM," peer counselor for Westfield State’s summer Urban Education Program (1998), coordinator/educator at Springfield’s Martin Luther King Community Center, and teaching high school biology for Westfield State’s self-enhancement program (MEOP). She plans to work in biological research and to complete Masters and Doctoral degree programs.
