2001 Massachusetts State College Student Achievers


Jose DosAnjos is a History major, with minors in both Canadian Studies and English. During his four years at Bridgewater State College, Jose has taken advantage of all that it has to offer. A Dean's List and honor student, he has participated in the Bridgewater-at-Oxford Program and the Washington Internship Program. As a McNair Scholar, Jose has conducted research and presented his findings at national conferences. His college involvement includes serving as a Student Leader for Minority/Bilingual Student Awareness Day, as well as Peer Mentor for the L.E.A.D and Turning Point Programs. He has been an active member of the Cape Verdean Students Association for four years and currently serves as its president. Jose's future goals include attending graduate school and earning a Ph.D. in history, eventually becoming a researcher and teaching at the university level.

Nicole Moseley is a Special Education major with a minor in Communication Disorders at Bridgewater State College. She has been a Dean's List student and has participated in research projects through the McNair Scholars Program for the past two years. Her leadership positions on campus have included serving as Treasurer and President of Afro-Am and serving ad a Resident Assistant. In addition, she has been a member of Circle K and has worked as an office assistant in the Office of Campus Judicial Programs. Her service activities have included participation in Turning Point, the L.E.A.D Program, Perspectives, and Minority/Bilingual Student Awareness Day. Nicole's future plans include enrolling in a master's program in Speech Language Pathology once she receives her undergraduate degree. Her future professional goal is to work in the public school system as a speech pathologist. 

Hana-Gi Hasan majors in Interdisciplinary Studies and has a minor in Business Administration at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Hana-Gi is a Dean's List recipient and is listed in Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. Her lists of leadership activities are quite impressive. She has been the President of the African American Studies Club, a member of the Student Government Association, and Student Activities Cultural Awareness Committee member. She also works at the Volunteer Center and is an AHANA Program Student Leader. In addition to her other activities, Hana-Gi has been a member of the Women's Rugby Club and Volleyball team. She has completed internships with the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Beacon, the student newspaper. Ms. Hasan is deeply committed to achieving her academic and career goals. She plans to attend graduate school for graphic design.

Larry Yeboah is a computer science major at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He is on the Dean's List with a 3.02 GPA and is the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award-BACCHUS/GAMMA Peer Education Network. Larry is a contributor to the college community by being a teaching assistant as well as a tutor for math and computer science. His leadership activities which include being the vice-chairperson of STARS, Students Taking Abusive Risks Seriously, a peer education program, participated in the ALANA Student Leadership Conference, a member of the Hudson Mohawk Association, and the Multicultural Student Society. In addition, he works at the Volunteer Center on campus and as AHANA Programs Students Leader. He was recently selected to Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. After graduation, Larry intends to pursue a career in the field of Computer Animation.

Ronnette McFarlane is a senior Communication/Media major with a minor in Theatre at Framingham State College. Ronnette is an outstanding student having been on the Dean's List five out of seven semesters. She has had work submitted to Visions, a communications award showcase for exceptional students in the field of communication. In addition to her academics, she is involved in the Black Student Union and servers as the Social Committee Chair of the Programming Board as well as the Director of Public Information. She is a participant of the Volunteer Center which allowed her to reach into the community to work at cleaning up a playground, worked at a soup kitchen and assisted in building homes for low-income families. Ronnette‘s goal is to own and operate a tri-support firm, providing Public Relations Advertising and Marketing services to small businesses. In addition she plans to open a theatre house that will introduce inner city children to live performances.

Walter Silva is a senior honor student at Fitchburg State College. He is a Dean's List student and the recipient of the Messier Award for Outstanding Accounting Student. He is a member of the hockey team and serves as the Vice-President of the Black Student Union. In addition to those activities, Walter is a member of the Accounting Society, Pathways to Leadership, and the Institute of Management. His future goals are to take the Certified Management Accounting exam upon graduation, work for an accounting firm and after one year return to school to work on his Master's degree. Upon completion of his degree he will take the Certified Public Accountant exam and work in top five accounting firms.

No photo availableSharon Gray is a graphics design major at Massachusetts College of Art. She is a Dean's List recipient and included in Who's Who Among Students In Universities and Colleges. She is an Ad Club Foundation Scholar and received the Community Service Award and the Honors Recognition in American Thought and Government. Sharon is actively involved in her community working with Warriors for Christ, Youth Leader in Boston, being student orientation leader and volunteer at Massachusetts College of Art and a volunteer graphic designer for Restoration Outreach Women's Conference in Boston. Sharon has completed two internships: BigBad Design, Boston, Wave Design Works, Boston and Funds Distributor Inc., Boston. Sharon believes in the standard of excellence and feels it should be applied to every area of life, especially education. Upon graduation from Massachusetts College of Art, she will enter the graphic design industry particularly, web design. Her long-term goal is to offer scholarships to minority students at her high school alma mater, Fontbonne Academy and at Massart.

Nadege Bouchard is a senior at Salem State College with a major in Business Finance and a minor in Economics. She has been actively involved in many levels of the college during her career. She has served as the President of the Finance Association, Vice President of the Women's Center, Treasurer of the Women's Center, and has been an active member of the African American Student Association and the Haitian American Caribbean Association. Additionally, she has served as a peer leader in the Alternative to Individual Development program at Salem State College. Ms. Boucard has been involved in various types of volunteer and charitable organizations. These include providing financial support to three young boys in Haiti through her affiliation with World Vision, serving as an active member and supporter of The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews and their efforts to transport Russian Jews back to Jerusalem, and serving a Sunday school teacher for the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Miami, Florida and at Eglise Bethel De Somerville, MA. Nedege plans to pursue a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in International Business. Her career goals are to be an entrepreneur and conduct international business with her home country of Haiti.

Herminio Furtado is a senior at Salem State College majoring in Political Science, with minors in Economics and History. He has a 3.30 GPA and has been on the Dean's List for six semesters. During his tenure at Salem State College he has participated in the Harvard Model of the United Nations program and researched the Cape Verdean community in Brockton. He has also served as a peer tutor in the Spanish Department. Herminio has held various leadership positions at the College. He was the Captain of the Salem State College Men's Soccer team, founder/President of the African Cape Verdean Association and co-founder of the Globalization Response Committee. He has also worked as a tutor for the Upward Bound Program through the Learning Center. Herminio intends to pursue a Masters Degree in International Relations and would like to study abroad at the University of Paris and do an internship in Washington, D.C.

Elena Wilson - At Westfield State College, leadership and service are key reasons why Elena is held in high esteem by the faculty, staff and her peers. A true leader and an active member of the Third World Organization, Elena held the office of President Spring 2000 and Vice president Fall 2000. She served as editorial writer and reporter for the Campus Voice Newspaper. She has demonstrated her leadership and professional abilities when she assisted the Director in organizing a conference for the Global Women's History Project, Spring 2000. She served as an Assistant Peer Counselor for students participating in the Urban Education "Bridge" program at Westfield State during the summer 1999 session; she then served as a Teaching Assistant for the Critical Thinking course summer 2000. Elena joined the residential staff as a student Residential Assistant. She has represented the college as a National McNair Scholar and at Bowie State University as a National Exchange Student. As a McNair Scholar, she has presented research papers entitled Contemporary Images of Blacks in the Press and Their Connections to Historical Stereotypes and Black Females Representation in Television Sitcoms. In recognition of her academic excellence, Elena was admitted to Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges and has been the recipient of numerous awards. She is an active member of the student chapter of the NAACP. Elena intends to earn a doctorate degree and become a college professor in Communications or History. She, ultimately, intends to work internationally as an advocate for women's rights.

Jennifer Guzman is a senior at Worcester State College who has a double major in Spanish and Business Administration with a minor in Secondary Education. She is on the Dean's List and a multiple year achiever in Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges for 1999-2000, 2000-2001. In addition to her academic talents, she completed an internship with the Labor Cost Control and has attended and participated in various conferences. Among the conferences are The Caribbean Student Conference, Black Men Think Tank and the Dominican-American National Roundtable. Her campus life included being Treasurer and vice-president in the Third World Alliance. Jennifer's further service to the college and community includes the Massachusetts Education Initiative for Latino Students, College Connections Mentoring and Tutoring Program for high school students as well as the Henry Lee Willis Center, the Worcester Youth Center and she serves as a volunteer Spanish teacher. Her goals are to become a high school teacher, pursue a Master's degree, own and operate a facility for the development and recreation of student youth.

Jennifer Memnon is an academically outstanding student and a very active member of the Worcester State College campus. She is a member several organizations and committees. Some of which are The International Orientation, The Consortium Fiesta 2000, The Commuter Advisory Board and an Orientation Leader. She has supported and attended WSC Athletic Teams, Campus Ambassadors Misconception of Africa, CAB Kids Day and many others. Jennifer has received awards from TWA for being the Most Outstanding Member 2000 and the Most Outgoing Member 2000. She is included in the 2001 edition of Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. As a talented young woman, Jennifer was the student speaker for The Dinner with the President of WSC 1999 as well as a student speaker addressing the Student Senate regarding an article in the college newspaper, the Student Voice Issue of spring 1999. Added to her talent in speaking, Jennifer also has a beautiful voice and has performed with the WSC Chorus Performance of the Mozart Requiem. After graduation she plans to attend graduate school in which she will pursue a Masters in Community Health Administration. It is her hope that by advancing her education, she will become more effective in serving those in the community who are in need. Jennifer envisions a political career within the United States Senate.

No photo available Stacey Miller is originally from St. Thomas, Barbados. She is an Occupational Therapy major at Worcester State College. Stacey's college career has been well rounded. She is a Fellow for the Organization of American States Fellowship and has served as Orientation Leader for the fall 2000. Service to the college and community is important to Stacey and demonstrated when she planned and helped to coordinate activities with Third World Alliance and International Students to bring programs to highlight diversity. She also serves as the Public Relations Officer of the International Student Union. Serving young people is another facet her activities by mentoring students at the Worcester East Middle School. In addition, she has done fieldwork at the Greenery Care Facility, Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital and Gates Lane Middle School. Stacey's future goals are to become an occupational therapist, go to graduate school and eventually go home to Barbados to manage her own rehabilitation facility.
