2004 Massachusetts State College Student Achievers


Austin N. AwasungAustin N. Awasung is an accounting and finance major at Bridgewater State College. A dean's list student for all his college semesters, Austin plans to pursue a Master of Management Science degree and become a certified public accountant.

Austin serves as a vice president of community service for the college chapter of American Marketing Association. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, the college's Center for Multicultural and International Affairs Speak-Out Team and a student mentor or LINKS (Linking Individuals to Networks, Knowledge and Scholarship).

Austin participated in the Bridgewater State College study tour to Lucca, Italy, in June 2003. He is a recipient of the college's Alumni Association Award and is an Award for Excellence participant. His long-term goal is "to continue to make my parents proud of me."


Victor Rosario Victor Rosario is an accounting major at Bridgewater State College. He is a dean's list student, a National Dean's List award winner and a recipient of an Award for Excellence and Athletic Excellence. Victor also served as a National Student Exchange participant in Florida and has studied abroad in Brazil.

As a senior, Victor recognizes the importance of helping students graduate. He is a mentor for LINKS (Linking Individuals to Networks, Knowledge and Scholarship), and as vice president and treasurer for MIB (Men Integrated in Brotherhood), he was essentially in the group's resurgence. He is also captain for the intramural co-ed soccer.

Victor has volunteered his time to help the Mainspring House homeless shelter, Turning Point LEAD program (Leadership, Education, Academic Development), and is a member of the college's Accounting and Finance Club. He plans to get an MBA from Boston University before becoming a controller.


Tisa McCarter-Harris Tisa McCarter-Harris is a sociology major at Fitchburg State College with a minor concentration in in dance. She was a four-year member and teacher for the Dance Club, and an elected officer in both the Latin American Student Organization and the Black Student Union. Tisa was a 2004 student represented on the college's Program Committee.

As an ACCESS achiever, Tisa has consistently maintained a spot on the dean's list. Her community involvement includes mentoring three students at Fitchburg High School and volunteering at a local dance studio.

Tisa's goal is to receive her master's degree in dance and to open a therapeutic dance program for youth at risk.


Chapella MayweatherChapella Mayweather is a communication arts major at Framingham State College with a minor in Spanish. She is a dean's list student who has served as Black Student Union president since 2001.

Chapella was Campus Leaders for Understanding Student of the Year in 2002 and 2003. She completed internships with Pratt and Whitney during the summers of 2002 and 2003. Her plans include pursuing a degree in employment law and working for a large corporation on the task of diversifying the labor force.


No photo availableEzra Mube is an illustration and painting major at Massachusetts College of Art. He has won numerous art awards including a second-place finish in the New Hampshire Arts Association 2003 contest and an award from the Massachusetts College of Art Painting Development. Ezra's work has been exhibited throughout greater Boston and southern New Hampshire and he was nominated for the Yale North Folk Summer Program.

Ezra has taught art St. John Church in Greenland, NH, and martial arts at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. He won two gold medals at the U.S. Tae Kwon Do Championships at Yale University in 1999 and 3 gold medals at the New Hampshire Tae Kwon Do Champions in 2000.

Ezra has lectured at English High School in Jamaica Plain and has been published in The Boston Globe and the Improper Bostonian


Victor SantanaVictor Santana is a business administration major at Salem State College with a minor in aviation and concentration in management information systems. Born in the city of La Romana in the Dominican Republic, Victor brings with him traditional values instilled by his parents and shares them with the college community.

He has been involved with the Hispanic American Society since 2000, serving as treasurer and president since 2002. He has also served in other campus organizations including the Multicultural Students Association, the Student Government Association and the Program Council - all while maintaining a grade point average higher than 3.0

Victor has proven his potential time and again through his campus involvement and strong academic profile demonstrated through his enrollment in an intensive college Honors Program for the last fours years. He plans to incorporate his academic strengths with his dream of working in the business/aviation industry.


Daniel HelvetiusDaniel E. Helvetius Jr. is a mass communication major at Westfield State College with a minor concentration in media arts. He received a Students of Color Achievement Award in 2001 and participated as a Washington D.C., where he has served with American Forum, a nonprofit media organization that encourages citizen engagement in state issues.

A member of the varsity football team, Daniel was selected as a Westfield State College National Exchange Student and served as a resident assistant at Louisiana State University from August to December 2002.

Daniel has filled positions as vice president for the Third World Organization, peer counselor for the Urban Education Program during the summer of 2001 and 2002, and a math and science tutor for students participating in the Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Program. He has provided Web design services to the Third World Organizations and LAFE (Latino Association for Empowerment).

Daniel wants to work in higher education in a resident life position. He plans to pursue a terminal degree in psychology and counseling with a focus on the needs of young adults.


Pamela GueroPamela Guero is an economics and business administration major at Worcester State College with a minor concentration in international trade. She is a dean's list student, chapter president of Omicron Delta Epsilon and a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Pamela has participated as a member of the student senate, secretary of the Third World Alliance and vice president and treasurer of the Business Club. She has served as a resident adviser and assistant, and has volunteered with Big Sister, the WHEAT Community Service Center in Clinton and Ginny's Fund in Leominster.

She plans to pursue graduate studies in international finance and relations.
