Confidentiality

Federal confidentiality laws protect visits and conversations with medical staff. The Health Service must maintain your medical record and medical information as private, as dictated in the Notice of Privacy Practices posted in the lobby, on the web site and handed to each patient at their first point-of-care visit.  We do not disclose information to parents or families unless explicitly authorized by the patient or in cases of emergency.

For testing not done on campus, Bridgewater State University Health Services works with an outside laboratory, Quest Diagnostics.  The payment for all send-out laboratory tests is the responsibility of the student and/or his/her insurance company.

If students, who are enrolled in the university-sponsored health insurance plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Care Elect Preferred (PPO) Health Insurance, have discrepancies in their bills or coverage of their services, concerns are mediated through our representative at University Health Plan. Only information pertinent to that particular claim is discussed.

Student employees work in Health Service. They are very valuable to us and assist the Health Service by performing duties that help make us more efficient. Student workers may have access to immunization records, are not allowed access to treatment or other medical information concerning the patient. All student employees receive confidentiality training and sign confidentiality statements that help ensure the privacy of our students. Any breech of confidentiality will lead to dismissal and/or may lead to other penalties.
