Observations

Week one: The children were read The Big Red Barn  by Margaret Wise Brown, using an interactive approach.  Children were encourage to label the animals in the barn, predict what was going to happen next and describe the scene on several pages. All three children were attending.  Kylie made 2 comments and scored 8/10 answers correctly on the checklist. Megan made 5 comments during the reading and scored a 4 on the checklist. She had difficulty identifying the first and last page. Ben made 4.5 comments, less than usual and attained a score of 4.5 on the checklist. He appeared unmotivated to answer questions during the interview and often answered with 'I don't' know'.

Week two: Read the Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.  Read straight through without comments.  Tough to do! Children responded but I did not support or expand  upon their comments. Kylie commented 1 time about the snow balls but answered 8/10 questions.  Megan made four comments, mostly about the apartment which was like hers.  She attained a score of 4 out of 10 on the checklist.  Ben made 1 comment but correctly answered the questions regarding the parts of the book with a score of 6/10.

Week three: We read the Ginger bread Man as retold by Brenda Parker and Judith Smith with lots of teacher lead discussion.  All children were actively attending to the book. Kylie made 3 comments during the reading, chanting the refrain with the others. She attained a score of 9.5 on the checklist.  Megan made 6 comments, (the most at this time).  She cautioned the gingerbread man to be careful. Her score was a 10 answering all the questions accurately.  She was able to describe a currant and the concept of floating. Ben chimed in 4 times and was able to answer all questions about the parts of the book.

Week four:  The Rainbow Fish was read interactively this week.  Great book to share and highlight different vocabulary.  The reading lasted 8 minutes. Kylie made 2 comments, one of her comments was questioned. Her score was an 8.  Megan made 3 comments, one to describe what an octopus was. Her score was a 9.5 losing half a  point because she did not describe the Rainbow fishes loneliness.  Ben made 2 comments and scored 6/10 points on the checklist.  He missed the parts of the book again.

Week five:  Read Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats without teacher discussion.  Lots of questions about the dog, Billy and the baby sister.  Tried hard not to answer or respond to any but impossible.  Some other children had difficulty attending to this book.  More fidgeting and off topic talking.  All of the three research children were on topic during their comments.  Kylie made 1 comment responding to another child's question. She scored an 8.5 on the checklist. Megan made 2 comments, the fewest so far and scored 9/10 on checklist, unable to name Billy the dog.  Ben made 4 comments during the reading and scored 4.5 on the checklist.  He was unable to name the dog, or tell the beginning or end of the story.

Most of his comments described the silliness of the bear and Eddie.  He attained a score of 8 on the checklist.  His highest so far.

Week Seven:  Read Where's My Teddy, by Jez Alborough.  The children recognized the characters from last weeks reading and several asked why the Bear and Eddie were afraid of each other.  Finally I was able to carry out conversations during the reading but I fear at the expense of the story line.  Kylie made 2 comments and scored a 10 on the checklist.  Megan made 2 comments and scored a 9.  Ben made 5 comments and scored a 7. No change from last weeks non interactive reading!#
