Introduction of Self |
I am a certified reading consultant who enjoys working with both children and adults. I have taught elementary school and have also spent much time in private tutoring. My present position is Reading Specialist in a suburban elementary school. My responsibilities are to teach and learn with the emergent readers in grade one. My afternoons are filled with student's in need of extra reading, speaking and writing support. These learners range in grade levels two through five. I am very busy and quite content in the role. My next adventure is to share my knowledge and teaching skills with adults with limited reading ability.
My college education began with a teaching certification in physical education. Next I ventured onward and earned a certificate to teach elementary education. My joy in teaching the young to read was my lead and drive to a Masters degree in Reading, which included a Certificate of Consulting Teacher of Reading. My certification in reading has allowed me to follow my dream, as I enjoy schooldays, employed as a Reading Specialist.

Introduction
The following three excerpts provide an introduction to the area of study. Balanced Literacy came as a natural and logical solution after extensive research in what is known as "The Great Debate". Many experts have disputed one school of thought over another, systematic phonics instruction verses the whole language philosophy. After many exchanges between "sides", experts such as the International Reading Association (1999), in their position statement, conclude "There is no single method or single combination of methods that can successfully teach all children to read. Therefore, teachers must have a strong knowledge of multiple methods for teaching reading and a strong knowledge of the children in their care so they can create the appropriate balance of methods needed for the children they teach." This web site, guides you through my travels in the related research, as I personally came to this same conclusion on my own accord.
