This is a review on the body of research that has been done on cognitive reading strategies. Within this review the theories behind cognitive reading strategies will be discussed, involving the research that has taken place over the last twenty years. The components of strategic learning and the roles of the teacher and learner will be examined for their importance. A review of the strategies that have been recommended for better student success with reading comprehension will be discussed and examined for their effectiveness. Finally some recommendations will be made for teachers for implementation of cognitive reading strategies in the classroom.
