Implications
for Future Instruction
Although the implementation of the exemplary practice in the reading-writing
connection showed significant results of reading professional book reviews to
improve the students reading-writing relationship, I would like to encourage my
students to continue making the connections in their reading and writing using
other pieces of literature. By writing a book review, students can crystallize,
extend, and deepen their responses to literary work.
The reading of children's literature and the writing of book reviews
presented the reading-writing connections.
The students were able to read several children's literature books and
write book reviews in a short period of time.
Since book reviews are a valuable form of reader response and a vehicle
to practice summarizing and develop higher-level critical thinking skills such
as interpretation and evaluation, I would like to extend this project to reading
novels and/or short stories.
Although
this study was exploratory, the findings reveal important implications for
further investigation in the reading-writing connection.
The study's results revealed that reading professional book reviews had
an impact on the students' writing which led to significant improvements
in writing book reviews. If the effects of reading upon writing are to be determined,
then other related studies need to be contributed to the support of the
reading-writing relationship. A
variety of factors should be considered in future work, including the
students' linguistic abilities and the teacher's method of instruction.
