Does implementing transactional strategies instruction improve reading comprehension and enable a reader to move from an acclimated reader to a proficient reader?

One of the most challenging areas of reading instruction is the development of reading comprehension. Some students are able to recognize words accurately and think of themselves as proficient readers. However, these students are not able to interact with the text to make appropriate connections to gain understanding.

In my study, I will focus on the transactional strategies instruction to help struggling readers become actively engaged in the reading process. Direct instruction and teacher modeling are the cornerstones of TSI.  I will teach my students through direct instruction and modeling to make predictions, to ask questions about the text, to visualize the story, and to summarize in a reading journal.

I hope to find that by utilizing the transactional strategies instruction my students will become more engaged with the text and improve their reading comprehension.
