Problem Being Investigated

Learning to read is a complex process. To become a reader and writer, an individual must be able to coordinate a variety of skills. Most children are able to make progress and achieve the skills necessary to read written material, but some are not able to negotiate and construct meaning through text. It is for these learners that I began to probe into the area of reading comprehension. What skills and strategies can I teach to my students to develop their awareness of reading and increase their understanding of text? With that in mind, my research focused on the effects of transactional strategies instruction (TSI) to help acclimated readers increase their interaction with the text and increase their reading comprehension.

Plan for Outcome

Transactional strategies instruction is a balanced approach to reading instruction. Direct modeling and direct instruction of decoding skills and comprehension strategies are the recommended methods to teach TSI. TSI is a flexible approach to teach reading and allows individualization. With modeling, flexibility, and individualization of the transactional strategies instruction, I hope to observe improvements in my students’ reading comprehension. Also, I hope to witnesse my reading students becoming more engaged and aware of their reading by using a repertoire of TSI comprehension strategies.
