Concentration: Short A Words

Objective:         To focus students' attention on rhyme.

Activity:           This activity is an adaptation of the traditional card game Concentration.  Using Short A words that the students have practiced in their reading program; the teacher creates a deck of cards that contain Short A rhyming word pairs.  The cards are placed in a grid-like pattern, face down in front of the students.  The first student flips over two cards.  If the cards rhyme, the student gets to keep the pair and is allowed to continue his/her turn.  If the cards do not match, the next player takes his/her turn.  Play continues until all the pairs have been matched.  The player with the most rhyming pairs wins.
