Lesson Plan – Phoneme Substitution

Initial Sound Switch

hand        band        sand

This lesson plan comes from Wiley Blevins' book, Phonemic Awareness Activities for Early Readers, published by Scholastic Professional Books (1997).

Objective:   To provide students with the opportunity to practice

                   phoneme substitution.

Materials:    Teacher created word lists

Activity:    In this oral activity, students make new words by

replacing the first sound in the word with the target

                   sound.

For example:  Ask the children to substitute the /h/ in

hand with /s/.  They respond “sand”.  Some additional

words to use with the targeted /s/ phoneme are:

                   hit         well          funny        bun

                   mad       bend         rat            rope
