Action Research Project:

Investigation on Approaches to Enhance Rhyme Detection and Rhyme
Production of First Grade Students

Project Abstract

The goal of this Action Research Project was to evaluate two instructional approaches to enhancing students' ability to detect and produce rhyming words.  Three first grade students (boys) enrolled in a self-contained special education classroom of a suburban elementary school participated in this project.  An alternating treatment design was utilized.  During Treatment A the students and teacher-researcher engaged in the shared reading of nursery rhymes, poems, chants, songs, and rhyming books.  Particular attention was paid to the rhyming words in each.  During the administration of Treatment B, the students and teacher-researcher narrowly focused on rhyme by playing games using rhyming words from the classroom reading program.  Following the treatments the students were asked to detect rhyme for five pairs of words and produce a rhyming word for five additional words.   Results of student assessments following the treatments indicated that the participants produced more correct responses following Treatment B: Rhyming Word Games.
