Lesson Plan – Phoneme Blending

Put It Together

I found this lesson plan in the book, Phonemic Awareness Activities for Early Readers by Wiley Blevins.  It was published by Scholastic Professional Books (1997).

Objective:   To provide students with practice in orally blending phonemes.

Materials:    Favorite Class Puppet

                   Word List

Activity:    This activity provides students with the opportunity to

orally blend word parts and say the word as a whole.  The

teacher/puppet tells the children that they are going to

say a word in parts.  Direct the children to listen carefully

and say the word as a whole.  For example, say /c/ /a/ /t/.

The children respond with cat.  Modeling and corrective

feedback from the puppet add to the enjoyment of the

activity.  This activity can be adjusted for students of

                   varying ability levels.

Level 1     -    Blend words by syllable:  sail boat = sailboat

Level 2     -    Blend words by onset and rime:  /m/  /ap/ = map

Level 3     -    Blend words by phoneme:  /m/ /a/ /p/ = map
