This lesson plan was adapted from Activity 10: Picture Cards (p. 27) Phonemic Awareness Activities for Early Readers by Wiley Blevins, Scholastic Professional Books, 1997.

Objective:   To assist students in recognizing in a set of three or four  words, which word has the “odd” sound or which word does not belong.

Materials:    Assemble a series of picture cards that contain at least 3 cards for each targeted sound.

Activity:    Tell students the position of the targeted sound.  Display  a series of 3 or 4 cards, one of which does not contain the same sound in the targeted position.  Have the student say the  name of each picture.  Ask them which one does not belong.
