My Literacy Beliefs

The are many factors that play a role in a child being successful in their journey to become not only literate, but successful.  The first is their environment prior to entering school. The more positive emergent literacy experiences a child has prior to entering school, the better prepared that child will be to learn to read.

It is the role of the schools to provide a nurturing classroom. This should include a print rich environment, daily opportunities to read and write and instruction for all students to develop literacy strategies. Students should have a choice in their reading material and a chance to interact with peers around text.

Finally, the home and school need to work together to help students develop and maintain positive attitudes towards reading to become life-long learners.
