Joseph Silverstein conducts Brahms's Symphony No. 3, which Brahms composed while revising some pieces he had originally written as music for Goethe's Faust, and Strauss's Don Quixote, in which Strauss tells the story of the idealistic Don Quixote and his doomed quests. Strauss turns the orchestra's winds into flutter-tonguing noise-makers to depict the sheep, one of the first instances of this extended technique. The soloists in this performance of Don Quixote are David Huckaby, cello, and Sarah Darling, viola.
