BSC Students 'Rock the Vote' at Local School

Today at lunchtime, there were more than sandwiches and entrees on the menu at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School. There was also a chance for students to do their civic duty.

More than 30 B-R students registered to vote during a lunchtime Rock the Vote event held at the school. Members of BSC's Student Government Association, President Kerry Fitzgerald and Vice President Anthony Straughn Jr., registered the students, and Bridgewater's Assistant Town Clerk Jolie Martin was on hand to make it all official. Music was provided by BSC radio station WBIM.

B-R senior Matt Zingg registered, and said being able to do it outside his school's cafeteria was helpful.

"I was going to have to go to town hall to register, this saves me the trip," he said.

Before every presidential election, Bridgewater election officials make a point to help young people register by taking the process to them.

"An event like this is good because it gets them involved," Ms. Martin said.

Susan McCombe, director of BSC's Office of College and Community Partnerships, which sponsored the event, along with the Division of External Affairs, said the Rock the Vote initiative is an important one.

"With the election a month away it is so important for students who have turned 18 to exercise their right to vote in this election year and incumbent upon us to facilitate an easy registration process," she said. "In addition, the connections that were made between the Student Government Association at BSC and the Student Government Council at BRRHS, as well as those with WBIM and the BRRHS student will translate into new partnership opportunities.


"This was a true partnership event between the college, the high school and the town," Ms. McCombe said. (Story and photos by John Winters, Office of Institutional Communications)
