Fifteen BSC students majoring in geography and faculty from the department recently spent a weekend on Cape Cod for the purpose of - in the words of
Dr. Vernon Domingo, professor of geography - "having students explore and learn about our physical and cultural environment 'through the soles of their shoes.'"
"CapeTrek" was the official title given to the academic excursion, said Dr. Domingo, who helped organize and lead the trip. He described the experience:
"We left on Friday in two college vans and returned on Sunday afternoon. We stayed in cabins in Eastham. The issues we examined included: coastal erosion, the history and status of Mashpee Wampanoag people on the Cape, salt marsh ecology, the growth of Provincetown from an artist's colony to a bustling town, and the impact of glaciation on the region."
It was, Dr. Domingo continued, "a great learning experience for all, seeing textbook writing come alive in the field."
Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan, associate professor of geography, also took part in the trek. (Story and photo by David K. Wilson, '71, Office of Institutional Communications)
