The Office of Institutional Diversity recently held its second annual Mix-It-Up luncheon, an event that encourages interdepartmental dialog, especially for faculty and staff who may not frequently interact.

Held in the Dunn Conference Suite on October 14, the get-together allowed employees of varying backgrounds and perspectives the opportunity to learn more about their colleagues and engage in cross-cultural conversations in a fun and relaxed environment. Also, a discussion segment gave participants the opportunity to share their responses to Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech.

Donna Wood, staff assistant in the OID who coordinated the luncheon, said the event is aimed to break down barriers between individuals and improve intergroup relations so that there are fewer misunderstandings.

"Open dialog and shared reflections," she said, "can help people understand why others act in certain ways," and perhaps help facilitate resolution when conflicts arise.

The luncheon was a huge success, said Ms. Wood. She said she plans for next year's luncheon to be organized by students on OID's Student Diversity Council, so they can invite their peers to join the dialog. (Story by Karen Booth, Institutional Communications)
