2002 Joint Fall Meeting of
the New England Section of the APS and the North East Region of the AAPT

General Information


The 2002 Joint Fall Meeting of the New England Section of the American Physical Society (APS) and the North East Region of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) will be held on October 25 - 27, 2002 at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

The meeting theme "Exploring the Physics of the Big and Small," will cover the topics of atomic and astrophysics. The Friday banquet speaker will be Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the Saturday banquet speaker will be Paul Hewitt, author of several physics and physical science textbooks and the popular "Hewitt Drewit!" series in The Physics Teacher. Dr. Alyssa Goodman, Dr. Willie Soon, and Dr. Owen Gingerich from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics will give invited talks on astrophysics. Their talks are entitled "A Dynamic View of Star Formation," "Solar Variability and Climate Change: The Quest for Physical Mechanisms," and "The scale of the universe before parallax." Invited talks on atomic physics will be given by Dr. Dave DeMille from Yale University and Dr. David Hall from Amherst College. Their talks are entitled "Tabletop probes for TeV physics: search for the electric dipole moment of the electron" and "Bose Einstein Condensate."
