Martina Arndt is the Chairperson for the Department of Physics. She has a University of New Hampshire (Durham NH) Ph.D in Physics and a Wellesley College BA in astronomy, and has brought outstanding teaching and research versatility to our BSU Physics Department.  Her research activities center on observing solar eclipses around the world.  She does work in collaboration with colleagues at University of Hawaii and with National Science Foundation funding.  She is working on projects in radio astronomy, including monitoring mesospheric ozone with colleagues at MIT’s Haystack Observatory and BSU students.  She was awarded the Presidential Award for Collaboration in Teaching in 2009 and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2010. This year she will also be serving as Faculty Associate for the College of Science & Math.

OFFICE HOURS  Spring 2012  T 9:00-9:30, R 10:45-11:45, F 9:00-2:00 orby appointment

Ed Deveney a University of Connecticut, Storrs CT, Ph.D. in atomic and molecular physics was hired after visiting positions at Amherst College (Amherst MA) and Wheaton College (Norton MA) following post-doc work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and at CERN. Ed developed the first physics research lab for undergraduates at BSU constructing tunable diode lasers for studying fundamental quantum mechanical phenomena in atomic/molecular and optical (AOM) physics.  He is a senior advisor for a NSF-funded research program at Yale probing fundamental atomic/nuclear and particle physics.  Prior to BSU he post-doc’ed with a 2000 US Fermi award winner at a National Lab including experiments at CERN.  He has also been involved in medical physiology research at Tufts Vet School.  Dr. D emphasizes student mentoring covering theoretical quantum mechanics, experimental AMO physics, computer simulations and electronics.

Thomas P. Kling (HomePage)
Associate Professor of Physics
tkling@bridgew.edu
(508)531-2895, Conant Science & Math Center Room 214
OFFICE HOURS Spring 2012 R 11:00-12:15, F 1:15-2:00 or by appointment

Dr. Thomas Kling, comes to us from visiting positions at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College, and Franklin and Marshall College. His Ph.D. is from the University of Pittsburgh in General Relativity, and he B.S. in physics is from Loyola University of New Orleans.  He studies how Einstein’s theory of General Relativity predicts light from distant galaxies will be distorted as it travels across the universe to us.  This “gravitational lensing” is one of the key tools in unraveling fundamental questions about the universe.  He collaborates with leading observational and theoretical researchers at Brown University, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh and involves BSU undergraduates directly in his work.
