Martina Arndt is the Chairperson for the Department of Physics. Martina has a University of New Hampshire (Durham NH) Ph.D in Physics and a Wellesley College BA in astronomy, and has brought outstanding teaching and research versatility to our BSC Physics Department. Here is an interesting article written about Martina - UNH's Next Horizons. Martina is an astrophysicist specializing in solar physics. Martina's efforts attract and excite many new majors into physics. Martina holds well received open houses at our BSC observatory several times a month. Check out and print her Observatory brochure.  Ask Martina about the 2009 Marshall Islands Eclipse Expedition!!

Edward F. Deveney (HomePage)
Associate Professor

OFFICE HOURS Fall 2009 TR 8:00-9:30 or by appointment

Ed Deveney a University of Connecticut, Storrs CT, Ph.D. in atomic and molecular physics was hired after visiting positions at Amherst College (Amherst MA) and Wheaton College (Norton MA) following post-doc work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and at CERN. Ed's role has been to establish experimental research programs. Thus far he and his students have successfully constructed a research-grade tunable-diode laser for atomic and molecular spectroscopy and in the future laser cooling and trapping experiments. This experimental program is now housed in what is called the BSC Laser Lab which was formerly a classroom but now a dedicated physics laboratory (Sept. '03). Ed is also involved in a research program at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine investigating pulmonary diseases in horses as well as actively collaborating on an atomic/molecular/nuclear/particle physics program at Yale University. You might also find Dr. Deveney logging a couple of miles in around campus or in rowing competitions against Dr. Williams.

Dr. Thomas Kling, comes to us from visiting positions at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College, and Franklin and Marshall College. His Ph.D. is from the University of Pittsburgh in General Relativity, and he B.S. in physics is from Loyola University of New Orleans. Tom's current research relates general relativity to astrophysics through gravitational lensing. When not working, Tom attempts not to drown while sea kayaking or lose all his money playing cards.

Dr. Jeff Williams has been at BSC for over a decade and served as chair of the department for many years.  He was awarded the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2006 but if you ask his students they will tell you that is impossible.  Jeff earned his PH.D. from Clark University in the area of Solid State Physics.  Jeff's recent work focuses on improving science education by working with local school districts, middle and high school teachers.  He offers workshops and graduate classes for teachers which are usually grant supported.  He also is the coordinator of the MAT in Physics and the MAT in Physical Science programs at BSC.  He was Chair of the National Committee on Physics in Undergraduate Education and served many years as the New England Section Representative to the American Association of Physics Teachers.  He enjoys teaching a wide range of physics courses including courses for the core curriculum like energy and society and understanding physics through art.  When not doing physics Jeff plays a diverse number of sports depending on the specific injury he has at the time.
