Bathroom Graffiti Found Referencing Vague Threat - February 4, 2009

The Bridgewater State College Police Department has received a report of a nonspecific death threat written on the inside of a men's bathroom stall in the Science Building. The threat, though vague, made reference to Thursday, February 5, 2009.

Although there is no particular reason to give credence to a threat of this nature, the Police Department will increase its patrols on campus strictly as a precautionary measure.

The Police Department does not believe that this threat is in any way connected to last year's bathroom graffiti threats. The Police Department identified a suspect in those incidents, and a criminal prosecution is ongoing.

The Police Department will prosecute anyone who directly or indirectly communicates a threat. A threat which causes serious disruption on campus will result in the immediate arrest of the person who makes that threat, along with the filing of felony charges punishable by up to 20 years in state prison. If a student is identified as responsible, he or she will face stringent college judicial action, including the possibility of expulsion from the college, in addition to the criminal charges.

Anyone with information about this incident is requested to contact BSC Police detectives at the number below. Thank you.

Campus Safety Alert - Updated 2/28/08 at 12:25 p.m.

To BSC Students, Faculty, and Staff:

Since our last communication at 4 p.m. yesterday, there have been no further developments with respect to the threats written on bathroom walls. The college is monitoring bathrooms and no further threats have been found. Police are actively patrolling campus and are in regular contact with the administration and the Emergency Response Team, both of which continue to actively monitor campus developments. You will be informed promptly if there are any significant new developments in this situation.

The college is aware that some community members are expressing a need for a written guide on what they should do in an actual campus emergency. The Emergency Response Team will be working on that in the next few weeks, and will forward this to you as soon as it is complete.

Should there be an actual emergency on campus, we will contact you quickly (both with voice and text) via cell phones using the Emergency Communication System, and you will be given directions on what you should do. The college has also installed hard-wired telephones in all classrooms for communication during emergencies.

Again, it is important that you list your cell phone number on the college's records if you have not already done so. There is a link for this in our previous communication, which is listed on the college's home page. You will need a Banner ID and PIN to enter your cell phone number in the system. We will also solicit emergency contact information for all employees, in paper form, over the next few days. We thank every member of this community for your vigilance and your understanding as we all deal with a difficult situation.

Campus Safety Alert - Updated 2/27/08; 4:00pm

BSC Police continue to investigate non-specific death threats discovered on Tuesday, February 26th written on women's bathroom walls in Maxwell Library, the Conant Science Building, the Rondileau Campus Center and Boyden Hall. These threats contained the words "murder" and "death" and made specific mention of "2-28."

Today, February 27th, an additional message was found in a female restroom in the Rondileau Campus Center making a direct threat on the life of the college president, Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria. In consulting with all members of the Emergency Response Team, President Mohler-Faria has decided that the college will remain open and he will be present on campus February 28th. The college is enhancing its already heightened police presence.

The President and the Emergency Response Team felt it was important that all members of the campus community be fully informed as to the specific nature of these threats. The college will be open on February 28th and classes will meet as scheduled. Students who choose not to attend classes are subject to individual class attendance policies as determined by their respective faculty members in accordance with college policy.

A limited number of students have overnight Connect Card access to the Conant Science Building between 11:00pm and 7:00am. This overnight access will be temporarily suspended this evening. The building will be open as normal during regular business hours beginning tomorrow morning.

We will continue to update the campus community as necessary with BSC homepage updates, email bulletins and, in the event of an actual emergency, communications through the college's emergency notification system. Members of the campus community that have not already registered phone numbers with the emergency notification system may do so at any time by clicking on the following link: http://www.bridgew.edu/EmergencyCommunication/

We ask that all community members remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the BSC Police Department (531-1212). There will be a $500 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the author(s) of the threats.

The Office of Student Affairs (531-1276) will remain open until 7:00pm this evening to respond to any questions from students, faculty, employees or parents.
