Spotlight on Leadership

Spotlight on Leadership

We're turning out spotlight on Laura Gilbert & Melani Gerenia.

This yearÂ’s dynamic duo is the Panhellenic President and Vice President. In their first months in office Laura and Melani have gone above and beyond the call of duty. During the fall Laura and Melani revamped and updated the Panhellenic constitution which had not been updated in years. Through hard work and role modeling the importance of teamwork, the women have fostered relationships among all the fraternities and sororities and upheld the standards of Panhellenic membership. Under the leadership of Laura and Melani the Council has grown in leadership, collaborated with the Rondileau Campus Center in raising money for UNICEF, and are hard at work for the spring semester of formal recruitment.

Past Spotlights on Leadership
For the summer, we are turning the spotlight on the 2008 Orientation Leaders.  As of June 30th, this group helped to welcome over 1400 new students to the BSC Nation.  Their leadership and dedication has made an impact on new students and the college that will last for many years.
Didi served as the Cultural Programs Chair of Program Committee. In that role she planned several events for the campus community that celebrate cultures from around the world.  In Fall 2007, we saw celebrations of Brazillian, Carribbean and Southern Creole cultures.  Didi also has held many other leadership positions on campus and has been involved with numerous other organizations.
Our first Spotlight on Leadership for Fall 2007 is on the brand new SWAT Team.  SWAT stands for Student Weekend Activities Team.  The SWAT Team for this year is Erin Roberts and Mickey Howard.  The SWAT Team works with clubs and organizations to plan weekend events for the students of BSC.  If your club is looking for ideas for events or would like support in planning or advertising a weekend event, stop by Student Involvement and Leadership and ask for Erin or Mickey!
This month, the Spotlight is on the 2007 Class Officers.  President Rebecca Folsom, Vice President Will Candler, Treasurer and Social Chair Ketna Julemeus and Secretary Samantha Arena (not pictured) have been working hard with other members of the Class of 2007 to plan many great events for their class.  This year they are working with the Alumni Office to bring back the tradition of having a Senior Ball.  Senior Week also is sure to be filled with many memories for all those who participate.
Anna Takahama and Amy Sawyer worked with the staff of Student Involvement and Leadership to lead a newly selected group of Orientation Leaders for the summer of 2007.

This spotlight was on the 2006 Homecoming Winners.  Congratulations to AWARE for winning the Banner Competition, to Ensemble Theatre and UTVS for winning the best overall parade float, to Keith Mistler and Priscilla Joseph, the Homecoming King and Queen and Will Candler and Becca Folsom, the Homecoming Prince and Princess.  Also our spotlight shines on Karen O'Leary and Program Committee for all their hard work throughout the Homecoming Week!  Congratulations to everyone.
Starting at the end of May with training and then continuing through the entire month of June, the 2006 Orientation Leaders welcomed the members of Class of 2010 to Bridgewater State College and that is why we shined the Spotlight on Leadership on this group of student leaders.
April 18-22, 2006 was this year's annual Springfest. Springfest is a collaboration between many different clubs and organizations on campus, led by Program Committee. Laura Simmons, the Special Events Chair for PC, led the charge to assemble these events into this annual weeklong celebration. Laura, along with her subcommittee and the rest of PC worked with Student Government Association, Club de Espanol, CVSA, WBIM, PRSA, AWARE, and many other clubs and organizations on campus to plan the entire week including the annual Drive-In Movie, the Springfest Carnival, the Springfest Music Festival and an Evening with Horatio Sanz.

In the picture: Derrick Zellmann, Jill Martinuk, Christopher Nuttall, Jennifer Donaghy, Kara Berry, RJ Cotter, Andrew Cullen, Rich Landry, John Mayo, Eric Jollymore, Michael Hamilton, Laura Piechowski, TJ Speranza, Eric Carlson, Tony Friscia and advisors Jess Lang and Michelle DeMille.

Spotlight on Martywood: These students have worked since fall 2004 to organize the NEACURH conference that was being brought to the campus. These students worked to form a bid which was presented at St.John Fishers College last February. Bridgewater won the bid and was the chosen school to host. For the past year these students worked on every possible detail with help from the ResLife office to put on a very successful conference attended by over 300 college students from all over New England and New York. It was a great accomplishment by these hard working students.

In 2006, Maria served as the President of Inter-Fraternity Council or IFC, which is where we caught her in the picture on the left. She is the first woman to serve as IFC President at BSC (and possibly the first in the country). Maria was also instrumental in reviving the yearbook that year and she served as the Arts and Entertainment Editor for The Comment.

In 2005, Alyssa Seeto was a first-year student at Bridgewater and she worked to reinvent the yearbook  by capturing the year for all of the student body.  Her philosophy as editor is to be a good leader by encouraging and motivating her staff.

Homecoming 2005: Viva Las Bridgewater provided ample opportunities to put a spotlight on leadership.  So the latest installment of the spotlight shines on the 2005 Homecoming King and Queen, Richard Landry and Becky Jenkins as well as the organizations who put together this year's winning Homecoming Parade float, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta Phi and Sigma Chi.  Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Homecoming Court and Parade this year!

Program Committee, The Afro-Am Society, Dance Team, UCC, CVSA and others joined together on September 24, 2005 to host Shoreline Drive and Big D and the Kids Table for a concert on East Hall Lawn.  Food, clothing and monetary donations were collected to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.  All donations were passed along to the Community Service Center for distribution to appropriate organizations.

Rich Landry served as the President of the Student Government Association, besides being involved elsewhere on campus. We caught Rich at the annual Involvement Fair, on September 14th, sharing information about Student Government and many of the other ways to get involved on campus. Over 50 clubs were represented at the Involvement Fair.
Although Colleen is involved in many activities on campus, we caught her in her role as the Program Committee Showcase Chair at the Welcome Week Open Mic Night on September 7, 2005. Over 20 students performed and 250 students attended this event on the first day of classes.
