What is the STREAMS SPIDER Network?

The SPIDER Network helps new science and math majors find a home in their department, develop study partners, and connect with students and faculty. Participants will join a small learning community, get some tips on how to prepare for their upcoming classes, and learn from experienced BSU peers.

  • Small learning communities or networks will be composed of two sophomore level and a junior / senior peer mentor. Each small network will share common experiences such as classes, commuter status, etc.
  • The peer mentor will provide some limited help in how to study for classes at the sophomore level in the major. The peer mentor will also introduce students to faculty in the department with similar interests.
  • The STREAMS SPIDER Network will provide a calendar of possible events related to science and math on campus to help students get to know each other and become more connected with the College of Science and Mathematics.

How does being Excellent work?

There are four parts to the STREAMS SPIDER Network:

  1. You'll have the chance to be mentored by a Natural Science or Mathematics major.
  2. You'll set goals for yourself for what you want to do with your degree in science or math from Bridgewater, and your mentor will help you think about how to take advantage of opportunities at Bridgewater to meet your goals.
  3. You'll participate (if you want to) in different campus events that will help you find joy in your campus experience.
  4. You'll meet faculty and other students in your major who have similar goals to you and can help you meet your goals.

Why be Excellent?

We know that your head is probably spinning with all the things you are being told you should do, but, really, you should seriously think about joining the SPIDER Network. First off it is specific to students in the Natural Science and Mathematics. You’ll work with faculty and other students in those majors. It gives you the chance to get intensive mentoring on exactly the things that are probably making your head spin: how do I keep my grades up? How do I meet faculty? How do I get involved in undergraduate research or internships? How do I do all this and keep a part time job? How do I have any fun at all?
