Service Learning Advisory Board

The mission of the Bridgewater State University Service Learning Advisory Board is to promote and facilitate the enhancement of student learning through service and community involvement.

The goal of the Advisory Board is to promote service learning on campus by providing advice and strategic planning for the Faculty Associate for Service Learning.

The objectives for the Board and the Faculty Associate are:

  1. To identify outreach activities to aid faculty in the initiation of service learning in their classrooms.
  2. To increase faculty development opportunities in service learning by
    1. Recruiting faculty to attend regional workshops and conferences to incorporate service learning in the classroom.
    2. Helping facilitate grants for service learning opportunities.
    3. Suggesting innovative and effective ways to support faculty in development of service learning.
  3. To identify and recommend resources and guide dissemination to the faculty for service learning projects.
  4. To identify and recommend the establishment of a system of reward and recognition for faculty engaged in service learning.
  5. To suggest institutional support necessary to expand and sustain the service learning programs.
  6. To discuss and suggest policy and programs for governance review.
  7. To identify and recommend incentives for student involvement in service learning.

The Service Learning Advisory Board includes the director of the new Community Service Center, which provides a clearinghouse of volunteer programs and opportunities that promote civic engagement for students, student groups, and BSU community members. The Center also serves as a resource to faculty who are developing academic service learning opportunities for their classes. The director is Diane Bell, ext. 2117 d1bell@bridgew.edu.
