Hurting, Burning

by Pilar Greenwood

She comes to me
carrying her memories inside
hurting, burning;
like a splinter into freshly-torn flesh.

She wants me to soothe the sting
of indifference.
I want to fill her bitter well with stars.

My efforts spent, I wish I had stronger hands
to help me push away the walls,
the thorns,
the shards
of her solitude.

But, in the end, she is
the one who will free her soul
from the piercing sting,
alone.

Hurting, Burning
