                                              International Practicum, Fall 2009

Currently, for this fall, there are two opportunities to engage in an International Practicum (student teaching) experience, either at the St. Mary's Primary School in Crewe, England or one of the laboratory schools on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.

This is an eight week, six credit experience that begins at the start of the semester. You must make application for this experience as you would for your Massachusetts school practicum - applications are due early in February 2009.  You must have met practicum eligibility through your department.  Participants will selected by representatives of the School of Education and Allied Studies.

This will be your first eight week experience and it will take place at the St. Mary's School http://www.school-portal.co.uk/Grouphomepage.asp?GroupId=5632 in Crewe, England, about 45 miles south of Manchester.  Manchester Metropolitan has a campus at Crewe and you would live in the dorms at MMC/Cheshire.  http://www.cheshire.mmu.ac.uk/mmucheshire.php

The opportunity is in San Juan at one of the laboratory schools (university schools) associated and on the campus at the University of Puerto Rico.  Working in the upper grades, 3rd on up, requires some knowledge of Spanish, working in the lower grades, more knowledge of Spanish would be beneficial.

For special educators or Dual majors, this will be your 'inclusion' experience.  You will return to Massachusetts to complete your practicum requirement(s) in the second half of the spring term.

Information Gathering and Meetings --

  • You need to complete the questionnaire (at this site) to begin the information and selection process.  You will send the questionnaire to Dr. MacMillan at the aforementioned email address.
  • In March we will have Bridgewater State students who already completed their international practicum share their experience with those who will are interested in the experience as well as to those students who have been chosen to participate.
  • We will work with Ms. Susan Rachouh, Director of Study Abroad Programs at Bridgewater State.  Her office will assist you in specific travel questions and arrangements.

Note:  In addition to Crewe, England and San Juan, Puerto Rico, we are currently in discussions with schools in Belize and Quito, Ecuador.
